Studio and party speakers

Hello, I'm planning to get some speakers for my home studio as I've started using synthesizers and other electronic devices like the Launchpad, but also to host parties at home.

The problem is, I don't know if home studio speakers like the Yamaha HS 7 or KRK are suitable for this kind of use. To be honest, I'm a bit lost among all these speaker choices, and I'm not very knowledgeable in this area. I'm afraid of making a bad purchase. I would like to know (this may seem like a silly question) if you can connect a laptop via a jack plug? Do I absolutely need 2 speakers, or is one enough? And is the type of sound produced by these speakers sufficient or even useful for parties, even if that's not their primary purpose?

Please consider that my knowledge in this area is non-existent, even though I have owned a portable Bluetooth speaker, but I imagine that's quite different.

Thank you in advance for shedding some light on this for me :).

    Hello.
First of all, what’s your budget?
Monitoring speakers are designed to provide the most accurate reproduction possible, without any particular coloration, and to operate close to the ear. They are not made for parties. For parties, you need "powerful" speakers, meaning with good efficiency and high admissible power.
These are really two incompatible uses.
If you want stereo sound, you need two speakers; otherwise, one is sufficient.

Hi, my budget is quite large I think (450 euros), but do you mean that studio monitors don't have enough decibels to put out or that they wouldn't be suitable just for a party? I want to avoid getting multiple types; I need one or a pair of speakers that would be suitable for listening at a party and for creating, even if we can't have it all.

      Hello Lucho-2

I listened to the Yamaha HS7 and HS8 at Sonovente (Massy Palaiseau) and the sound is excellent, in fact much better than many non-amplified speakers. I currently have the DJ Monitor 5 bi-amplified with a PreSonus Audiobox USB sound card, and I’m definitely considering getting the Yamahas as well; I’m not sure which ones yet because I own an active Jamo subwoofer, so the HS7 should probably be enough for me. The DJ Monitor 5 I’ve had already has excellent sound but doesn’t go low enough in the bass spectrum with the 5" driver, which is normal. However, there’s enough punch for a 25m² living room without any issue, so with the Yamaha in 6.5" or 8", it should only be better. That said, you’ll need a good sound card to fully enjoy them, which I also plan to change ;-)

The KRK RP8 G3 are also very good ;-)

      Hello buddy Char Snipeur
Monitoring speakers aim to provide the most faithful reproduction possible, without particular coloration, and to function close to the ear.

Yes, I agree with you, but they can also serve a dual function, I confirm ;-) as long as the equipment is up to par with a sound card, etc., and they are well placed. I listen to all kinds of music with them, primarily dubstep, US rap, and metal, and I can tell you that it sounds really great.

Hi, thanks for your response which reassures me in my choice. By the way, do you know Focusrite as an audio interface?

Attention; 25m² room, if you have a bigger one...

Yes, at a low level without a subwoofer, the DJ Monitor 5 doesn't really perform well with certain music that requires bass, because of the 5". With a subwoofer, no problem, but it consumes more power... lol. It's better to have 8" woofers. The other Yamaha and KRK with 8" will work without issues in double my living room, that's for sure. Where I listened to them was much larger than my entire apartment, and it was only for the monitoring speakers and mixing table, with a small section dedicated to the electronic piano.

      For lucho-2

Yes, I know some models from this brand, and you have some that are not too expensive and sufficient. I have a Presonus, but I'm going to get one that handles 4 monitors to keep my DJ Monitor 5.

      re,

you have this set, in fact it's the one I'm going to take. I was surprised by the sound; I don't perceive the difference with the Yamahas, just with deeper bass for the Prodipe, yet they are also 8"

      https://www.woodbrass.com/analogique-monitoring-prodipe-pack-paire-de-pro-8-v2-+-msb-(offerts)-p196012.html
you also have this set with the active subwoofer
      https://www.woodbrass.com/analogique-monitoring-prodipe-pack-pro-8-v2-+-pro-10s-v2-p184151.html

a sound card that goes with it

      https://www.woodbrass.com/usb-presonus-audiobox-ione-edition-speciale-+-studio-one-v2-producer-p182485.html

      or this one

      https://www.woodbrass.com/usb-focusrite-scarlett-2i2-p138584.html

but all that remains monitoring, huh... you can have parties with them, to mix and all, but not meant for 50 people I think, but since it's for your place and not outdoors, it should be fine even in a large living room for the Prodipe; KrK, the Yamahas are less oriented towards electronic music and rap ;-)

450€, the budget is tight for monitoring speakers with enough power for a party.

      Hi

I agree. For good quality professional equipment, prices range from €1000 to much more.

That could work; medium-range speakers are starting to have enough power. However, the prices are not the same. At this price, you could get nearfield monitoring plus sound reinforcement for less money.

It's too expensive, don't you have less expensive gear but of good quality? Thank you for replying anyway.

...lol ...you should get some analog monitoring speakers .....good enough for what you want to do, in digital the prices are crazy ...lol

it's up to you otherwise go straight to hi-fi ( amp + tower speakers, or bookshelf + subwoofer)

I understand that it's not meant for that at the base; I just want to have good equipment and invest more later. I thought about getting the subwoofer that goes with it, but not right away. And my living room is 32 square meters; I measured it, and I know that size matters when choosing near-field monitors.

I also realized that I needed an audio interface, which I hadn't planned for in my budget. So, is one monitor speaker enough? Is it REALLYnecessary to have both? I will definitely get the second one later, of course. ;)

Unfortunately, I can't, and I'm just an amateur, not a pro, so I'm starting off slowly. But if you know of any good speakers that fit my budget, I'd like to know. Originally, I wasn't planning on getting Yamaha NS 7 or 8.
