Using Hiren's Boot?

FannyK -
 FannyK -
Hello,

Here’s a summary of my problem... For a few days, I had issues with a sound driver (the computer detected headphones when I hadn’t plugged them in, and didn’t detect them when I did...). I couldn't find a solution (in the device manager, it told me everything was up to date) and one fine morning... the computer got stuck on startup, unable to access safe mode, repair, or debugging led me to a black screen. Anyway, on another computer, I downloaded Hiren's Boot to a USB, made all the manipulations in the BIOS of the bugged computer to boot the USB first... It worked! I landed on the page with all the choices that Hiren's offers.

But I can’t use them correctly. I want to retrieve my files and back them up before trying to repair (I have some really important documents!) but none of the tutorials I found have given me any answers. The only explanations related to my problem are about recovering deleted data, but my files were never deleted... I’m a bit scared of tinkering randomly. Please help me!!

Thanks in advance :)

    Hello

You choose mini xp, from the menu

It will start an XP session, and by going to the file explorer, you should see your hard drive.

      Hello again!

Mini xp seems to be the only one not working... on purpose? It loads, I get the multicolored wallpaper, the mouse, and no icons :( Unable to do anything...

    There's a procedure to do with F6 that I hadn't seen. And it's not working :/

It tells me: Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices installed in your system, or you have chosen to manually specify an adapter. Currently, Setup will load support for the following mass storage device(s):

    <none>
    • To specify additional SCSI adapters, CD-ROM drives, or special disk controllers for use with Windows, including those for which you have a device support disk from a mass storage device manufacturer, press S
    • If you do not have any device support disks from a mass storage device manufacturer, or do not want to specify additional mass storage devices for use with Windows, press ENTER

When I press enter, it takes me to the desktop with the mouse and nothing else. When I press S...

Setup could not find a floppy drive in your machine to load OEM drivers from a floppy disk.
Press ESC to cancel loading OEM drivers
    Press F3 to quit setup

My English is okay, but I'm not very knowledgeable about computers and right now, I'm lost!! Do you have any idea what I should do?

It's the mini XP that doesn't recognize the disk controller.
Which version of HBCD is it?

For Hiren's boot, I took it and burned it onto a CD, then I put it in my drive (bios manipulation for boot priority), I boot into mini xp and in the start menu, you have programs or software and inside you have all of Hiren's boot programs. If you want to make a copy of your files, open an explorer window and connect an external hard drive/USB stick and copy everything you want =D

Little help from Hiren's boot: https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-37585754-hiren-boot-cd-tutoriel

You should try with a live Linux, like Puppy Linux or Lubuntu.

      toutoulinux doesn't work either...

      Booting Linux
      partnew (hd0,3) 0x00 (hd0,0)/linux.iso
      Error 15: File not found

I'm going to try lubuntu :/

Lubuntu works! I opened it in live mode (I read in a tutorial that it allows you not to delete the data), and... there are so many possibilities that I'm afraid of making a mistake. Can you tell me where I need to go and what I should do? Or give me the link to a tutorial? I've found a lot but none explain how to recover my files... (or maybe I just didn’t understand ^^).
Thank you very much in advance!!!

To know: I looked everywhere, in the folders I have access to, but I haven't used the programs offered by Lubuntu. Since I don’t know which one is the right one or what manipulation to do. I haven’t opened all the programs, but I can already "see" my hard drive in "disks" (that's a good sign, I imagine!). But it offers me to format, create a disk image, restore a disk image... anyway, I haven't touched anything, really don't want to mess things up now!!

You need to open the file manager from "Start," Accessories

It should display your drives, including your hard drive.
You can then search for your files and copy them to an external hard drive or a USB stick.

It's there, finally, I have three "54GB volume", "Windows", and "System". 54GB and System open and contain files like System and Lubuntu. And when I try to open Windows it says:

Error: An operation is already pending

I noticed in several tutorials that there are details made for NTFS hard drives and it seems that mine is one. I don't really know what that means but...

NTFS is the file system used by Windows.
Linux distros read it without any problems.
Here, there seems to be a problem.
I will try to find out why..

Thank you very much for your help! Here is some additional information, possibly important because I believe the entirety of my hard drive is not "mounted."
In the "disks" accessory, I have a list of all the disks detected on the computer.
      500GB hard drive
Jetflash Transcend 8GB (my USB stick)
      Block device 517 MB (/dev/zram0)
      Block device 517 MB (/dev/zram1)
      Block device 517 MB (/dev/zram2)
      Block device 517 MB (/dev/zram3)
659 MB Loop device (no idea what this is)

The USB and loop device are mounted. The hard drive is divided into 6.
      Recovery partition 1 (mounted)
      System partition 2 (mounted)
      Windows partition 3 (not mounted)
File system partition 4 (not mounted)
And two disk spaces with unallocated space.

When I try to mount the two "missing volumes," I get:

      Error mounting system-managed device /dev/sda3: Command-line `mount "/media/Windows"' exited with non-zero exit status 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error
Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
      for more details.

      Error mounting system-managed device /dev/sda4: Command-line `mount "/media/sda4"' exited with non-zero exit status 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error
Failed to read of MFT, mft=10 count=1 br=-1: Input/output error
Failed to open inode FILE_UpCase: Input/output error
Failed to mount '/dev/sda4': Input/output error

And now, I am lost... Does this help you understand something?

    Hi there,
at the same time, if I understood correctly, the PC is down and not necessarily the disk.
We should first test the disk on another machine.

    and... There you go!

    Re
What is the model of the PC?
How many physical hard drives are there?
Are there any drives set up in RAID?

It is an essential b computer "Smart'mouv 1402

      Bios version: 1.27a
      CPU type: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2377M CPU @ 1.50GHz
      System ROM: EOOO - FFFF
Sata port 0: Hitachi HTS54-500 GB

I have never added a hard drive so there is only the one already present in the computer at the time of purchase. The HDD mode is AHCI but I have the option to change it to RAID. There you go... Some info thrown together because I don't know what might be useful to you!

    Re

    to clear up any doubt:
You should connect the drive externally to another PC.

There, check if it is detected correctly.
Launch CrystalDiskInfo to check the drive's status ...

My laptop is ultra-thin; I showed it to someone who knows a bit about computers, and they said that it's not possible to remove the hard drive and reconnect it. :/
