Hello,
After a complete sector-by-sector disk restoration,
the system cannot find an operating system on the boot disk
even though the image verification and restoration process completes without errors.
I find myself without any means to restore my PC and I am blocked.
I also tried to boot from the Windows 10 CD
and repair the startup, but the response is that it cannot be repaired.
Can someone help me resolve this issue to get a working system back?
Thank you in advance for your help.
PROCEDURE FOLLOWED:
I just built a new PC with the following configuration:
ASUS Z170-Deluxe Socket Intel LGA 1151 motherboard
INTEL Skylake - Core i7-6700 (3.4 GHz) Socket 1151 processor
CORSAIR Hydro Series H75 Watercooling for CPU
ASUS Nvidia GeForce STRIX-GTX970-DC2OC-4GD5 graphics card - 90YV07F0-M0NA00
CORSAIR Vengeance LPX Black 16G(2x8G) 2666MHz CL16 1.2V RAM
LG BH16NS40 SATA BluRay Burner - BD-R 10x - DVD±RW 16x - Black - OEM Version
CORSAIR 100% Modular HX1000i 80 Platinum Power Supply
WESTERN DIGITAL Caviar Black WD1003FZEX 1TB SATA-600 hard drive
WD MYBOOKLIVE DUO Network Drive.
WD 1TB USB Drive.
Software: MICROSOFT Windows 10 Family 64 bit OEM full version
Microsoft Office 2013 Family
Acronis True Image 2016 Local for 3 workstations
Plus all my other software
The 1TB disk is divided into two partitions C and E of equal size + hidden partitions (Boot and Recovery).
This is the first time I am using ACRONIS software.
After installing Acronis True Image 2016, I created a boot disk.
Then I created a complete sector-by-sector backup image of partition C + Boot +
Image name: Mes partions_full_b1_s1_v1.tib -> Size of the image on the disk 30861430 Ko
To restore, I reboot the PC using the Acronis 2016 boot disk I created.
1) I select RESTORE in the menus on the left side of the Acronis interface.
2) I select the DISK BACKUP tab on the right side and select the image file.
3) I click on the DISK RESTORE button on the right side of the interface.
4) I choose the option RESTORE WHOLE DISKS AND PARTITIONS.
5) I select NTFS (No Label) (C:) (Indicators: Pri Active, Capacity 487.8GB Used Space 65.34GB, Type: NTFS)
+ MBR and TRACK 0
+ RECOVERY PARTITION (Indicators: Pri, Capacity 450MB Used Space 354.8MB, Type: NTFS)
6) Specify the location of the partition:
NTFS (No Label) (C:) (Indicators: Pri Active, Capacity 487.8GB Used Space 65.34GB, Type: NTFS)
7) ACCEPT -> Acronis does its calculations and shows me:
Partition location: NTFS (No Label) (C:)
Partition Type: PRIMARY
Partition Size:
Free space Before: 1MB
Partition size 487.8GB
Free space After: 0 Bytes
8) Specify the recovery parameters for partition 1-2:
Recovery partition: Pri Act, Capacity 450MB, Used Space 127.4MB, Type: NTFS
Partition type:
Primary, Mark the partition as Active
Partition Size:
Free space Before: 0 Bytes
Partition size: 450MB
Free space After: 0 Bytes
9) Select the Target disk for restoring the MBR:
Drive: Disk 1, Capacity 931.5GB, Model: WDC WD1003FZEX-00MK2A0, Interface: Serial ATA
Option: Validate backup before restoration
10) EXECUTE
PHASE 1/5 VALIDATION -> OK
PHASE 2/5 -> OK
PHASE 3/5 -> OK
PHASE 4/5 -> OK
PHASE 5/5 -> OK
11) REBOOT

Good evening,
Have you tried disabling UEFI in the BIOS?-
Good evening ginto5,
No because I do not know what procedure to follow.
I also tried various repair solutions using the WINDOWS 10 DVD.
I tried to run Bootrec.exe with different options /FixMbr /Fixboot /ScanOs /RebuildBcd
Either it changed nothing or the actions were refused.
Finally, I deleted the two partitions of my main disk, reinstalled Windows 10 on a 490GB partition
and then rebooted the PC from the Acronis Boot disk and there I launched a restore of only the C partition.
Apparently, it worked, and I was able to get my system back in working order.
However, I do not understand why when we make a global sector-by-sector backup of a system partition (C:) + Boot + MBR, etc...
It does not work after a full restore????
Are there any tricks I do not know to restore the system?
You mentioned disabling UEFI, but why?
Can you tell me how to have a reliable backup and restore on my PC?
Thank you for your help.
Best regards.
Jair- Hello,
In recent years, there have been several changes in PCs, and these changes are the result of agreements between Microsoft and the main computer manufacturers.
On one hand, for managing hard drive partitions, the traditional MBR has been replaced by GPT, which explains why Fixmbr and Fixboot no longer work on hard drives.
As for UEFI, I'm not too familiar with it in detail, but from personal experience, it caused me a lot of problems when installing a dual boot of W8.1 and Linux......
For backups of all my PCs, those of my family and friends, I use Macrium Reflect, which I have never had any issues with; it's free but only available in English.

Hello,
This has happened to me frequently. Without understanding why, here’s how I got out of it:
- I reinstall Windows with the installation DVD or USB drive.
- I restore my "c:" drive with Acronis True Image.
Note: I use "Acronis True Image Home 2010" because I don't like the newer versions.
