Hard Drive Recognition on Panasonic

Question

Hello,

I just acquired a Panasonic AS640 series TV that is working perfectly. However, the TV does not recognize my 500GB WD external hard drive. Furthermore, the hard drive makes a regular clicking noise and the internal disk does not spin.
P.S.: The hard drive works on the computer and another TV.
Do you have an explanation?

as "Sannin_WD" said; additionally, a TV once it detects a hard drive, if it is compatible; it offers to format it with the format supported by this TV. And there will be a formatting test that must be successful.

Symptoms like these can always leave us perplexed... Nevertheless, there are a few additional elements that should be taken into consideration in order to get on the right track. Firstly, I suggest you check the format of your 500 GB external hard drive. The format of the drive (its file system) is the intermediary that allows the TV (or computer) to communicate with the drive (send it commands and understand each other ;) ).

As for TVs, there are some that support both NTFS and FAT32 file systems. On the other hand, there are others that can only communicate with drives formatted in FAT32.

If I were you, I would consult the TV's documentation, on one hand, to see which file systems are supported and, on the other hand, make sure to check the properties of the drive (from a PC) to see what its format is.

I have just checked the technical information of the TV which supports the FAT 16, FAT32 and EXFAT formats, while my hard drive is in NTFS format.
Is there a solution to still be able to use this hard drive?

Thank you for your feedback :) So now we know what we're dealing with ;)

Indeed, the three formats that your new TV supports are also compatible with PCs running Windows and MAC. That said, the hard drive, once reformatted to one of the aforementioned file systems, will be compatible with both the TV and your computer. The only thing left to find out is whether the other TV you have (which obviously supports the NTFS format) will support FAT32 and ExFAT (so you can use the same hard drive on all your devices). Once this detail is known, you can easily decide which format to assign to your 500GB WD hard drive (FAT32 or ExFAT).

To reformat the hard drive (and change it from NTFS to either FAT32 or ExFAT), you will need to follow the steps that the tutorials I'm sending you suggest ;)

Note: don't forget that any reformatting will erase the contents stored on the hard drive, and you should make sure to back them up elsewhere beforehand!
