Videos on Allocine won't play - even without adblock!

Hello,

No matter which browser I use (Chrome, Mozilla, Internet Explorer, all up to date, I checked), videos on Allocine - as well as on Canal +, by the way - haven't been playing for the past two weeks. This happened suddenly. The screen stays black, even the ads don't play.
-
And the problem can't be coming from adblock (that's why I'm starting this new topic, since all the others suggest disabling adblock as the only solution): I first tried disabling it for the page, then for the site, without success; so I completely removed it to see, then restarted the computer. Still nothing.
-
I would add that the comments section of Allocine managed by Disqus is painfully slow and only works about once every two times I browse it, whereas when I'm at friends' places, it poses no problem.
-
So I'm wondering: how to fix this?
Could it all have the same cause - like a codec that might be causing problems, I don't know, I'm not that knowledgeable... Note that I have no issues with other sites.
-
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello,

Having had the same problem for more than a month and a half now (black screen "stuck" at 0s) and not finding a solution, I proceeded by elimination (I use Firefox): by disabling adblock for Allociné: negative result

Starting Firefox in safe mode (therefore without extensions): the trailers work again

Uninstalling adblock: negative result

Going into the adblock filter preferences and unchecking all my filter subscriptions then reloading an Allociné page with a trailer: the trailers work again

So I reactivated ALL my filter subscriptions, then unchecked each of them separately to test the result by reloading the trailer page for each new disabled subscription until one of them allowed me to watch the famous trailer.

Result: the filter blocking the trailers (in my case) is: the EasyList subscription.
But as it is useful to block other ads on other sites I didn't want to do without it SO I reactivated it then reset all the counters (for the filters of this subscription) to 0 while already on a trailer page, then I reloaded.

Some counters "activated" so I unchecked them, reloaded the page and then new ones "activated" so I unchecked those as well, etc. until no others activated.

Result: the trailers work again

Here is a screenshot of my results: http://hpics.li/5669e63

I hope I could contribute to solving your issues

Have a nice day :)

A sure way to know if adblock is causing the trailer (or other) problem is to temporarily move the contents of the folder "adblockplus" located at the following path: C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Yourprofil.default\adblockplus to another location.

The above example is aimed at Firefox users but this folder also exists for other browsers.

The file we are interested in is "patterns.ini", it is where the unwanted addresses are stored, grouping all filters from all your subscriptions; it works somewhat like the Windows "hosts" file.

For some reason I don't understand, even after uninstalling adblock, this file seems to remain active for the browser (unless manually deleted).
This does not invalidate adblock's responsibility for the malfunctioning of trailers even if it is uninstalled.

So to summarize: go to the address mentioned above, take ALL the contents of the "adblockplus" folder, move it temporarily to your desktop for example, then try to launch a trailer. If it works, then adblock is the culprit and if that is the case, replace the files back in their original folder and refer to the elimination method from my previous post.

I hope I have been as clear as possible in my explanations and that this helps you with these inconveniences.

Have a great day!

EDIT: Following the addition of new filters, the trailers are once again blocked.
Here are the additional filters to uncheck: http://hpics.li/05aae23 , http://hpics.li/0bbf893 .

I have also compiled a complete list of these for those who prefer to use copy/paste to find them more quickly.

Have you tried updating Java since all the players are coded in JS, it seems?

Thank you for your response.
Unfortunately, it doesn't change anything.
-
I just checked, Java works correctly for Mozilla and for IE - not for Chrome, since apparently Chrome works without Java now if I can believe this message that appeared: We have detected you are using Google Chrome and might be unable to use the Java plugin from this browser. Starting with Version 42 (released April 2015), Chrome has disabled the standard way in which browsers support plugins.
-
When I relaunch with Java properly verified, the problem persists on all three browsers...

It's worth trying to update with a codec pack; after that, it could be a system file corruption, but that's rarer.
A QuickTime update as well: www.apple.com/fr/quicktime/download/ if you're on Vista or 7.

I'm using Windows 8 (which I'm having a bit of trouble with, it's on a new computer that's only two or three months old); should I try updating QuickTime then?
Thanks for the advice, anyway.

;)
It can’t hurt!
However, if you have the possibility to back up your personal documents, the "factory reset" might be the ultimate solution, but it's true that it's sad to have to resort to that for a video playback issue.

I installed a codec pack, checked that QuickTime was up to date, restarted, but it's still the same. I might have gained something in the process, though: the videos still won't play, but I feel like browsing the internet is noticeably faster.
-
I'm going to wait a bit.
If I can avoid having to format everything...
(That's what a factory reset is, I suppose?)

For the codecs, I don't know
but for Adblock + Ghostery, I "found"

on this page
http://www.allocine.fr/video/video-19554187/

ADB+ :
---- disable (in grey)
Ghostery (block everything except the tags):
---- AB TASTY
---- DSIQUS for the comments
---- ScoreCard Research Beacon

Hello,

I have the same problem: the video part remains black, even the ad doesn't start.
I tried on Firefox, Chrome, Safari (I’m on mac osx).
I uninstalled and then reinstalled flash player, so it is up to date.
I disabled all extensions in FF, no better.

However, on Windows (virtual machine on VirtualBox), it works on both FF and Chrome.

Any idea?

The trailers are working for me again, although I don't know exactly why... The method described by Thispat is, however, interesting.
