Hello,
On my external hard drive, some (not all) of my folders have names with quite strange characters (most of which are prohibited). To give you an idea, please look at the list at the bottom of the message.
Not only do some display:
The syntax of the file, directory, or volume name is incorrect."
Additionally, some folders or files have dates ("Modified on") but with completely false dates
No folder or file with special/prohibited characters can be opened or renamed (even from the properties window). According to the properties of the external hard drive, my "trapped" files are still present because the available and occupied space on the drive remains the same as it was when it was functioning normally.
Can someone please help me?
I have very important work that took a long time to accomplish (so if we could avoid the formatting solution as some forums suggest). Even the antivirus doesn't work.
I can work on Windows XP and Windows 7.
Thank you in advance!

- 1. " "Folder path" refers to a location that is not available. It may be a location on this computer's hard drive or on a network. Please check that the drive is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or home network, and then try again. If you still can’t find the information, it may have been moved to a different location."

Fortunately, I was able to find the solution by myself.
- You just need to switch to Windows 7.
- When the external hard drive (or USB stick) is inserted, click on Analyze Problems and not on Continue without analyzing.
You have a progress bar with 2 small boxes: check both, and click on Start. With my external hard drive of about 500 GB, it took me about 2 hours and 30 minutes at most.- Finally, I followed this excellent tutorial, adapting the names: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPVwZLFnauw
I recovered most of it, but unfortunately, a good portion of my photos and other files have disappeared. Even though it hurts, we deal with it...
