Why does my screen turn off when I make a call?

My daughters gave me a Galaxy Trend Lite. Why does the phone turn off like it's in sleep mode when I'm on a call? To hang up, I have to turn the phone back on by pressing the power button. Is there a manipulation to do, and what is it? Thank you in advance.

      Well, I have this problem too. My phone goes into sleep mode before I put it to my ear. It wasn't like that before. But if I call on WhatsApp or Hangouts, I can't cancel it anymore; I have to wait until it stops or when it hangs up.
