Hello,
Have you tested another cable?
Could you check if the drive appears in Disk Management (right-click on Computer - Manage - Disk Management) and what information is displayed? If the drive doesn't have a letter, you could assign it a letter - right-click on the disk in question - 'Change Drive Letter and Paths': https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows?ui=en-US&rs=en-001&ad=US#1TC=windows-7.
The same goes for Device Manager. Expand 'Disk drives' to see if the drive is detected and if there are any yellow exclamation points.
It's possible that the drive is failing. To determine if that's the case, you could test it using the manufacturer's diagnostic tool, or third-party software: https://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/39851-disque-dur-etat-de-sante-et-garantie
Do you have any important data on the HDD?

I looked at what you told me about disk management, it's not at the top but at the bottom I have disk 1 unknown not identified which disappears when I remove the USB and I checked the device manager, no yellow exclamation mark, I have USB to IDE/SATA DEVICE USB device which also disappears when I remove the USB. Sorry for this amateur info but I don't understand anything, thanks for your help if you have any ideas.

ces209, if changing the cable doesn't yield results, the hard drive may be reaching the end of its life...
Have you had time to perform the diagnostic test I suggested? It will indicate if the health status of the hard drive is poor. If that's the case, check if the hard drive is still under warranty.
If you have data to recover, take a look here: https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-37640569-recuperer-des-donnees-sur-disque-dur-et-cle-usb

ces209, actually I was talking about another USB cable in case this one is damaged. Also try it on another PC, if possible.
As for the diagnostic software, does it recognize the drive? If possible, take a screenshot.
Do you have data to recover from this drive? If so, have you looked at the links I provided?
Is the drive still under warranty?
