Hello,
For several days now, I haven't been able to print. I've uninstalled everything and reinstalled the driver, but still nothing. I decided to connect the printer directly to my PC via USB, and I received the message "device installation in progress." I had a window on the screen that I'll try to describe as best as I can:

Printer connection via USB
- Device driver installation = ready to use
- HP Photosmart C4700 = ready to use
- USB print support = ready to use
- HP Photosmart C4700 series (DOT4USB) = ready to use
- HP Photosmart C4700 USB device = ready to use
- IEEE 1284.4 compatible printer = ready to use
- HPPhotosmart C4700 series = X Failed
- Photosmart C4700 (DOT4PRINT) = ready to use

I noticed that on the second to last line where there's the failure, HPPhotosmart is written without a space between the two "P"s, exactly as I note in the description. Could the problem come from that, and if so, how can I fix it??? I should mention that I made sure to disable my firewall before connecting the printer.

Thank you for your help.

Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 36.0

Hello magalieetrudy,
What version of Windows 7 is on the PC?
Start, right-click on Computer, Properties, it's noted on the line System type.
Best regards.

I will follow your advice to the letter and uninstall everything, then I will clean up with CCleaner. I will download the software again and restart the installation. I will take care of this in the early afternoon, and I will keep you updated as soon as I try again. In any case, I already thank you for the time you are giving me.

Hello friends,
Thank you for having read me already, that's nice.
My computer is Windows 7 64-bit.
I have downloaded the latest driver from the HP website several times since yesterday, and despite that, it still doesn’t work. I consistently get the same message during the driver installation.
Best regards

Is this the driver you downloaded, PS_AIO_06_C4700_USW_Full_Win_WW_140_175-4.exe.
See you!

Yes, that's the one, it's the complete version.

Did you properly uninstall the old installation before installing the new one?
Is Windows up to date?

glg29 Posted messages 29751 Registration date   Status Contributeur Last intervention   4 581

Sure, I suggest we start the process over, but first, a few adjustments.
You must uninstall drivers/software related to the printer before you start the installation again; this is a necessity, it's imperative to avoid conflicts between an old installation and the new one.
I invite you to restart this process and ensure that everything related to HP Photosmart C4780 no longer exists on the PC, not a trace, nothing.
You may also use Ccleaner to remove file traces and clean the registry.
Then, disconnect the printer from the PC and restart the computer.
Try a fresh installation again and connect the printer only when the procedure specifies. Please report back afterward.
Use the driver PS_AIO_06_C4700_USW_Full_Win_WW_140_175-4.exe, it's the right one.

I'm back, but feeling quite desperate. I just tried to do everything again: I deleted everything related to the printer on my PC, ran CCleaner, everything was perfect, no errors. I downloaded the driver software and installed it on my PC. I run it, at first it works well, my printer is detected, then I get a Printer Configuration window, it confirms that my printer is connected, and then I get a message with a big red cross: The printer configuration has failed. This appeared after I was asked if I was installing it over a network, it worked a bit and then boom. On my screen, I have the following message: "Click on Retry to reinstall the printer or Next to continue the installation without establishing a connection to the printer. I will connect later." And I have the choice between Retry or Next. Retry does nothing. I have a diagram that shows two computers connected to each other, going to a box with an antenna and waves, and going to the printer, and that's where I see a big red cross.

I just clicked on next, and after a few seconds, a new message appeared: "The installation of the software for your HP Photosmart 4700 series is complete, but your device is not connected," and I have an icon on the desktop for HP Add a Device.

Are you trying to install via USB or Wi-Fi?
An antenna with waves is Wi-Fi; can you send me a copy of the diagram, please?
See you later!

magalieetrudy Posted messages 69 Status Membre 1

I tried both, but the result is the same. I won't be able to provide you with a copy of the diagram since the printer isn't working at the moment. I must admit that I'm feeling lost...

The software installed correctly, the procedure went to the end?
If so, have you tried to configure the printer via wifi from the control panel of the printer?
See you!

magalieetrudy Posted messages 69 Status Membre 1

Yes, I attempted the Wi-Fi installation through the printer. Yes, I think the software installed correctly since I received the message "device detected." An important thing: I just found a discussion on the HP support forum, a person who had exactly the same problem and had to migrate to Windows 8. I'm trying to post the link to that discussion: https://h30434.www3.hp.com#M27181. I can't even imagine switching to Windows 8; I'm not tech-savvy.

First, install it using a USB cable.

I'm going to check the link, but having to switch to another operating system to get a printer to work leaves me skeptical!
Is the wifi enabled on the PC?
Catch you later!

Yes, the Wi-Fi indicator is on my PC, and I am also skeptical about changing the operating system...

Try the software update utility hpusetup.exe and see if it can help!
There is also a printer installation assistant from HP, hppiw.exe.
Indeed, Windows 8 seems to fix the issue, surprising!

Hpusetup.exe finished, it has downloaded a critical update for Windows 7 for better network connection reliability. I need to restart the computer. Then, how should I check if the problem is resolved?

Try to set it up via Wi-Fi from the printer; the procedure should be indicated in the brochure, in principle.
See you!

I'm sorry, I just flipped through the manual, and there’s no mention of connecting directly via the printer. I don't know where I stand anymore. Should I turn on the printer and try with the USB to see what happens?

glg29 Posted messages 29751 Registration date   Status Contributeur Last intervention   4 581

Try also using the USB, with the printer turned on; when you plug it in, the computer should recognize it.

The printer with the USB isn't working either. As soon as I plug in the USB, there is indeed a message saying that the driver installation is in progress, but then I get the info that the device driver could not be installed, and the HP Photosmart C4700 series has failed.

Try with the assistant mentioned earlier in a response, it's not easy for me to explain, it's simpler when you're in front of the computer!

Is this the Photosmart C4700?
4700 is the series, Photosmart C4740, Photosmart C4783, Photosmart C4799 are the printers in the series.
See you later!

Done: the assistant indicates the following message: The following printer has been detected and is connected to the computer. The current full version of the HP software is already installed for the selected printer (mine), but the basic functional drivers appear to be missing or incorrectly configured.

There is no number on a label resembling those I mentioned earlier?
I'm starting to lose my grip on our story, it's the first time I've seen an installation happening and a printer out of order!!
Maybe check this link, everything is really explained, Setting up the printer on a wireless or wired network for HP Photosmart C4700 All-in-One printers.
See you later.

If there is a label on the front of the printer: it says: HP Photosmart C4780 Print Scan Copy.

magalieetrudy Posted messages 69 Status Membre 1

I just went to the control panel, devices and printers. I have a Photosmart All in One printer scanner copier that appears with a yellow triangle on it. I click on it and go to properties, hardware, and I clicked on each line, and each time it says it is working properly. I don't understand anything anymore...

magalieetrudy Posted messages 69 Status Membre 1

Well, nothing is going right. I just started an Avast scan, we'll see how that goes. I give up, I sincerely thank you for your help, I am aware of the time you have spent on me. I think I'm going to buy a new printer, hoping it will work... Have a good evening.

Perhaps update Windows 7 through Windows Update, keep the printer running and connected via USB, see if this update offers a driver in the optional updates, in which case install it.
Sorry for not being able to do more, I've run out of ideas!
Best regards.

No, please don't apologize. On the contrary, it's really nice of you to have tried everything to help me out. I'll check tomorrow to see if Windows Update offers something to fix it, and if it does, I won't fail to inform you. As for tonight, I'm exhausted, I've been in front of the computer since this morning... and for nothing... I really want to express my deep gratitude to you; you have been incredibly kind. I wish you an excellent evening. Best regards.
