USB 2.0 - 3.0

Hello,

I would like to know the compatibility between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0.
Can a USB 2.0 key work on a 3.0 port?
Can a USB 3.0 key work on a 2.0 port?

I found this but I don't understand what the cable is...
Compatibility
USB 3.0 Host // USB 2.0 Cable // USB 2.0 Device OK
USB 2.0 Host // USB 2.0 Cable // USB 3.0 Device OK
USB 2.0 Host // USB 3.0 Cable // USB 3.0 Device OK
USB 3.0 Host // USB 3.0 Cable // USB 2.0 Device Negative

Can you clarify this for me? Thanks in advance :)
Configuration: Windows XP / Chrome 40.0.2214.111

Hello!
The USB 3 cable is different from the USB 2 cable, which is why it cannot be connected (as your table indicates).

Otherwise

Can a USB 2.0 drive go into a 3.0 port? > Yes
Can a USB 3.0 drive go into a 2.0 port? > Yes

Thank you!
So to simplify, any key will go on any port...
But to connect a device (e.g. external hard drive or other), does the device and its cable need to be of the same generation?

Here are all the USB flash drives!

As for the external hard drive, even though it is USB 3.0, the side you plug into your PC will always be compatible (but you won't benefit from the USB 3 power).

Regarding the compatibility issue, it occurs when certain peripherals end up on USB 3 (for example, certain smartphones), where you'll need to have the right cable.

okok thank you very much :)
So for a computer it's still better to have a 2.0 port, right?

Well, that's up to you, but in the future, there will only be USB 3.0 because it's faster!

No... USB 3 is gradually becoming the new standard. There’s no "have to." The only thing you need to know is that no matter which USB you use, it will work. However, the technology used will be the least recent of the system. For example, if you plug a USB 2 stick into a USB 3 port, both will operate in USB 2 mode. If it’s the other way around, it will be the same. But everything is compatible.
After that, the cable of your external hard drive is different only for the connection on the hard drive side. The one that connects to the computer remains compatible no matter what.

Hello.
To put it simply, USB 3 is backward compatible, so you can use it with USB 2. However, the capabilities of USB 3 will only be utilized if all the relevant components are USB 3. Otherwise, the USB 2 component will be limiting. But that's all.
