Hello
It all depends on what you want to use it for.
If it's for purely Mac use, then yes, you need to reformat it to "Mac OS Extended Journaled."
If it's for purely Windows use, then no, because it’s already ready.
If it's for mixed use (Mac and PC), then yes, you need to reformat it to "MS-DOS (FAT)" or better "exFAT" if your Mac offers it, and remember to choose the type MBR in options.
To help you, here’s how to do all that:
Launch "Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility"
Select the USB drive by clicking on the first icon, which indicates the size of the USB drive
Choose the "Partition" tab
Important step:
Choose "One Partition" (or two or more) for the "Volume Scheme" field. If you leave this field set to "Current," then all the other fields remain grayed out, preventing the formatting from being completed.
Give a name to your future USB drive.
For the "Format" field, choose:
- "MacOS Extended Journaled" if for purely Mac use
- "MS-DOS (FAT)" or better "exFAT" if for Mac and PC use
Another important step: click on "Options" and choose:
- "GUID" for purely Mac use with Intel processor
- "Apple Partition Map" for purely Mac use with PowerPC processor (very old Macs)
- "MBR" for Mac and PC use
Start formatting by clicking on "Apply"
