Create a dynamic reference to a chapter

Hello,

I am creating a specification document in Word 2010. I am making numerous internal references to other chapters, for example "see chapter xxx".

However, as the writing progresses, chapters are added here and there, which makes the references to the chapters become obsolete (actually, I wait until the end to make these references, but I foresee the difficulties).

Is it possible to insert dynamic references in the text, so that when I refer to chapter 5, and then I add a chapter before it making it chapter 6, my reference changes automatically?

I specify that I have properly set up my document to use chapter styles, and I therefore have a table of contents that works perfectly and updates itself with my changes.

Thank you in advance for your help,
Roger

Configuration: Windows 7 / Chrome 40.0.2214.93

Hello,

if you used the "Heading 1", "Heading 2",... styles to format the titles of your chapters, here is a method that avoids the creation of bookmarks:
in the References tab, "Cross-reference", select "Heading" in the category.
The titles of your chapters will be listed below. You just need to select the one you want.

The answer you found referred to paragraphs and not titles. And besides, they were numbered and, again, bookmarks were not necessary.

In any case, it's great that your problem is solved, and thank you for returning to provide a solution. Also, feel free to share the link to the page so that readers can know the context in which the solution was proposed. I think it’s this page:

I found the answer elsewhere. You need to use Bookmarks, as well as the insertion of "Ref" fields:

"select the text, then go to the Insert tab, Bookmark, and give it a name.

Then, in the Insert tab, Quick Part, choose Field.

In the list of fields, select Ref and you should see your bookmark, just choose it and validate.

To update this link, Ctrl + A to select the entire document followed by F9 to update the fields.
"

Have a good day,
Roger

Good evening C-Claire,

Thank you for your method, which is much simpler than the one I had found, which was surprisingly complicated for a feature that is quite intuitive.

That is indeed the link in question. I just didn't know if it was the house's preference to include links to other forums.

Thanks again and see you soon,
Roger
