Email forwarding issue (unwanted!) to the same contact

Hello,
I'm on Mac OS X (10.6.8) and I'm using MAIL and FIREFOX (and I'm not a computer pro yet, far from it...).
I also have an iPHONE 3 gs mobile phone on which I receive the same emails that I get on my computer, all well configured some time ago by a top pro from IT. I have only ONE email address (on FREE). Until now... Everything is going well.... (!).

For some time now, I have noticed that when I send myself an SMS from my mobile phone, I immediately receive the SMS double on my iPhone. Alright...

The other day, (to retrieve a document that was in an email sent to me but that I stupidly lost in my email inbox by putting it in the trash), I resended this same email from my iPhone (where it was also present) to my computer. I then received this email in my mailbox on my computer, the first time, with the document I wanted to retrieve (with the mention: "Fw" + "Sent from my iPhone"). So far... everything is still fine.

A few minutes later, I received again (!) a forward of this same email on my computer and I realized that this time, a copy of this same email was also sent as a copy (!) to someone close to me who was in my contacts (for info, I was this time in "cc" (!) in this 2nd same email forwarded again). This person sent me an email asking me "why are you sending me this?". I apologized, removed them from my contacts in my address book just in case. And I restarted the computer.
And for the past 4 days, some of the emails I send are still being sent as a copy to this same contact (who is no longer in my "address book" now) in the form of "----- Forwarded Mail -----".

They are now also receiving a copy of some emails I send to other people than them (I know because I also receive these emails as I am in "cc" each time...).

For your information: I also went into MAIL PREFERENCES and by clicking on RULES none is selected (there is no forwarding email lingering, nothing..)

Is there anyone who can find a solution so that this contact no longer receives a "forward of the email" from some of my emails? What could I change in my computer settings to stop this? A huge thank you to whoever finds the solution.

Configuration: Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) / Firefox 32.0

Hello everyone,
Following all these Kafkaesque issues and based on a friend's professional advice, I changed all the passwords for my FREE account (account and email/webmail) and.... everything was resolved overnight (no more forwarded emails, no more registrations on a multitude of sites - with profiles (!), without me having requested them, etc....). So in case of... Do it! (And do it again regularly)

Thanks again to everyone who helped me or provided leads on this site.

Hello, and thank you for this feedback.
So, indeed a problem with the Free Zimbra server...
and actually, changing passwords from time to time is not a bad idea...
Thanks again for this feedback.
See you!

Hello

I would lean towards an iPhone issue because:
- strange thing, you are receiving your texts in duplicate
- the email problem appeared after you sent an email from the iPhone to the Mac.

Could you temporarily disable the messaging on your iPhone and see if your texts are still doubled and if an email sent is still received by this friend when it shouldn't be received?
If disabling the mail messaging on your iPhone fixes your issue, then you will need to call your IT friend back so he can factory reset your iPhone and reconfigure it.

Good evening Ritchi
First of all, thank you very much for looking into my issue on this rainy Monday (!).
As I told you, I'm not a computer expert and I only solve some problems by looking for solutions on the howto website, which is really helpful for many non-tech enthusiasts like me.

If you consider the mobile phone as the first possibility of failure, how do we "temporarily deactivate the messaging on an iPhone"...?

PS: (To make sure I've explained the setup correctly, when this contact receives "forwarded" emails, these are emails I send from my Mac computer)

Hello

1. From the home screen, tap on "Settings";
2. Select the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" line;
3. Select the Mail account (tap on the > character to the right of the Mail account)
4. In the window that appears, you should see the blue E-Mail icon with a button that is activated because a green portion appears to its left. Touch this button and slide it to the left. It will change color from green to white/gray.
There you go, the account is disabled.
To reactivate it, slide the same button back to the right so that it turns green again.

Ritchi,
As you indicated, I went to my iPhone 3gs, then to SETTINGS, I selected the line "Mail, Contacts, Calendar", and on the page I landed on "accounts" (among other things). I then selected my account (where my operator Free - mail - name appears). Then "account" shows up in the window that appears (with below in this same window: "POP account information", "incoming server" and "outgoing server"). This "account" is indeed already selected (via a blue button - and not green) so it is active.
I placed my finger on this blue button and slid it to the left, it then changed from blue to gray. The account is thus supposed to be "deactivated".

Then, I "self-sent" a text message from this same iPhone and... I still received it in double immediately (the same text message twice in a row).

I then tried to send myself an email from this iPhone... but I can't do it because... my Free account is "deactivated". And when I press "mail" (on my home screen), the iPhone presents me with a "welcome to mail" window with the option to choose different options (microsoft exchange, mobileme, gmail, yahoo, aol, and.... other). But I didn't go any further while waiting for your advice...

For your information (!): I had selected from the beginning of this exchange to "receive replies by email" on the "CommentCaMarche" website.
And since then, the last email I received from the "CommentCaMarche" site (your last one) has also arrived to me again as "forwarded mail" (with always a header ----- Forwarded Mail -----). More specifically, I receive this email normally once in my mailbox and then again ANOTHER TIME this same last email from my email address, with always this same close contact receiving it "in cc" as well as myself receiving it "in cc".

Now, it's the first time that an email sent to me from an external contact arrives as "forwarded" or "re-sent" to this same contact as well as to myself...

Do you see any logic that holds in this? I'm stuck...
Thank you again.

Hello

Experience shows that disabling Mail on the iPhone doesn't solve the email problem.
You can therefore re-enable your Mail app on the iPhone.

On Mac:
In Mail, open the Mail menu -> Preferences and select the "Composing" tab. Is the option "Automatically add me to" checked, and if so, what value does it have?
It would also be interesting to know the sender of the emails. Perhaps knowing the full header of an email would clarify the situation?
In Mail, click on an email received in duplicate with your friend as the recipient.
Open the View menu -> Message and choose "Raw Source"
A window will open to display your email in raw format, so with plenty of lines that are useless for the human you are but useful for the computer servers.

Problem: This email displayed like this gives plenty of information. If you copy it here, you're exposing your data to the whole world (I'm exaggerating a bit), but it's concerning. The best would be to show it to your friend who made the settings to see if he notices anything.

Hello,

In Mail Preferences, in the Composition tab, uncheck "Automatically add me in Cc".

And in the Mail Help menu, here’s what it says for:

Highlighting unwanted recipients:
Set an option to avoid sending messages to unwanted recipients. When you enter an email address that is not in your chosen address list, it appears in red.

Choose Mail > Preferences, then click on Composition.
Select "Mark addresses not ending with", then enter one or more trusted addresses, separating them with commas.
To enter only a domain (the part of the address after the “@” symbol, for example “apple.com”), include the “@” sign for extra security.

I don't know if this will fix the problem. Good luck.

Hello,

Since the emails sent to the wrong recipient come from the Mac, one possible explanation is that when you type the address of a recipient, the auto-completion kicks in and without you realizing it, adds that recipient, not based on your address book, but from the list of previous recipients. In that case, you need to clear that list from the Mail menu bar under the Window / Previous Recipients menu... you select all and delete...

Hello,
I just attempted the two previous suggestions - which will be very valuable to me in the future! - but they do not solve my current problem.

Thank you again to all of you.

On the Mac side:
I have indeed checked in Mail, preferences, composing, and the option "Automatically add me in"... is not checked.

To try to identify the sender of the emails (of those certain emails that are forwarded to me in copy along with a contact without my request), I took two or three to access the full header as Ritchi suggested to display their "raw content" which indeed has plenty of info...

Knowing that I can no longer call upon this IT colleague to decipher this computer language, could we go all the way to put an end to this situation that is really becoming a burden for me and likely also shed light on others? (Knowing that I had already tried to check many other forums to find a solution and that I've never seen similar situations.)

Through the "raw content" of one of these emails, what information could enlighten me about the potential sender in question?

Knowing that the typical profile of these windows that open is:
Return-Path: (=MY EMAIL ADDRESS)

Received: from (=an address that starts with zimbra+etc....LHLO....)...by (=an address that starts with zimbra+etc....) with LMPT (+date)

Received: from (=an address that starts with smtp1......free.fr...+ numbers...) by (=an address that starts with zimbra+etc....) with ESMPT id..... for.....(=MY email address) + date

Received: from.............. (= an address that starts with smtp1....).... by.......(MXproxy) for (=MY EMAIL ADDRESS) + date....

Received: from (=address that starts with zimbra....(unknown etc...).... by...(=an SMTP address (Postfix with ESMTP id (+numbers).... (+date) + for (my email address)

Date :.......
From.... (=MY EMAIL ADDRESS)
To :(=THE EMAIL ADDRESS OF THE CONTACT)
Cc : (=MY EMAIL ADDRESS)
Message-ID :........ (numbers + letters....)
I-Reply-To :...... ((numbers + letters including the email address of the person who originally emailed me...)
Subject : ..........
Content-Type : ....
Content-Transfer-Encoding: .......
X-Originating-IP: : ........
X-Mailer:
X-Authenticated-User: ( = MY EMAIL ADDRESS)

+......... The continuation of the email..... seems to just be a transcription in a kind of "encrypted_computer_language" (?) of the email I received from your site (forwarded email, just taken as an example among the other emails received) originally, and which starts with this "header": ----- Transferred mail -----

PS: yesterday, I also sent another email to a long-time friend, who replied immediately by email. Everything is fine...
But 3 minutes later (!), I receive again an email (to my address) of his same reply containing our two exchanges (under the title/subject: Reexp :(+..... the title of the email that I had just sent to this long-time friend), From....(my email address to.... still the email address of this same contact (who receives only certain of my emails...) and to myself which appears in Cc.....

A bit Kafkaesque...

How can I decrypt essential information by analyzing the "raw contents" of all these emails I receive in forwarded/transferred...?
Can I extract crucial information to see if I can find the same information on other emails received or sent "normally" in the past?

A thousand thanks to you for your help and for the follow-up that I eagerly await to try to move forward and succeed in finding the flaw.

PS: for your information... : this morning, when I turned on my Mac OSX, I also found all my desktop (where yesterday 7 or 8 folders were arranged a bit to the right and left of the screen) "transformed": all the folders have changed places and are now lined up on the right (?!), neatly organized.

Hello,

Zimbra has been Free's server for some time now. Former Free users were invited to migrate to Zimbra, which I never did for my email accounts with Free, after reading about the troubles some people had with Zimbra.
Moreover, Free POP accounts have often switched to IMAP, which causes different behaviors on devices, due to the synchronization of IMAP accounts.

I assume your email address is on Free and that the problem lies at the Free server level. What I would do is go to your Free email account from a web browser and check all active rules directly on that account.

Hello,
After reading Francis's last option, here is the first question that comes to me:

- Is there a way to unsubscribe from Zimbra and easily stay/return to the Free server? Knowing that the times I had to log in to the Free server to check my emails, it seems that I actually switched or migrated to Zimbra - without recalling having actually done this operation...?!

- Second question/track: is there a possibility that one or two addresses might "lurk" in this Zimbra account at Free that I "frequently empty" - and that could "cause a bit of a mess" in my mailbox?

- Third question: You suggest that I go to my Free account from my computer and "check all the active rules directly on this account." But knowing that I'm not an IT professional... what does this mean concretely?

Would changing the password be enough? Or does it involve other operations? If so, which ones specifically? Thank you again so much.

Hello

I don't know the answers to questions 1 and 2
For question 3: go to the page http://mfilter.free.fr/mf.pl, enter your email address without the @free.fr part and your email password.
The page that will display contains any filters that govern your free email
See you tonight

Hello Ritchi,
I just went to Free, which actually migrated me to Zimbra. But I never checked the boxes:
- I want to benefit from the new filters
- I want to resynchronize my contacts
- I want to resynchronize my mailbox
And apparently, no contacts are showing up in my mail accessed via Free/Zimbra...
I feel like these filters I could set up on Zimbra wouldn't solve my issue.

New info... since this morning, (in addition to the first contact who has been receiving forwarded emails from my Free address for a few days), a very close new contact also received - independently - the same message in "forwarded" mode from me (?!)...

What should I do...?

Hello,
And to top it all off... I also received an email from myself this morning (!) - containing a simple photo/portrait of me, which I haven't sent myself recently or only in the past (over a year and a half ago) from my iPhone - but not under the name/subject that the message I just received this morning has (as I just reviewed all my sent archives of SMS and emails on my phone and on my iPhone).

What to do...?

Hello

I had the same problem as you

my issue was that someone hacked my email so they had access to my NAT and everything (PC and more) so I deleted my email and created a new one
(it was a hotmail email and not from a provider)

so I advise you to delete your email

best regards

after that, you can do what you want :)

Hello,
I absolutely cannot delete my email address as I only have one that is very important for my work (and also personal use). This has been the case for over 10 years.

Does anyone have any other leads or solutions to understand where all these incidents might be coming from...?

Thank you very much to all of you.
