WD Elements vs WD My Passport: Which one is better?

Hello,

I plan to buy a 500GB external hard drive this fall, and I did a bit of research online. It seems that the best manufacturer is Western Digital, with its two products: Elements and My Passport for PC.

I wanted to know which one is better between these two products in terms of lifespan, efficiency, security, price, shock resistance, ... ?

My computer is a HP Pavilion G6-2342sf running Windows 8 with an Intel Core i3 processor at 2.3GHz, if that helps with anything.

Thank you in advance.

Hello Abdelbasket75,

If I understand correctly, you're hesitating between WD Elements Portable 500GB and WD Passport Ultra 500GB. It all depends on your preferences and needs. Just as gabrieltexier said, if you only want an external hard drive to manually store your data (copy-paste) without the aid of specialized software and you don't need password protection, then the WD Elements would suit you perfectly. On the other hand, if you're looking for additional features such as encryption and password protection, software for automatic or scheduled backups to the drive and Dropbox, and a WD Windows 8 app to organize and ease access to your multimedia files, the WD My Passport would be a better fit for you. The warranty period is different as well: 2 years for WD Elements (in Europe) and 3 years for WD My Passport Ultra.

Here are the links to
WD Elements: https://shop.westerndigital.com/fr-fr/products/portable-drives/wd-elements-portable-usb-3-0-hdd
and WD My Passport Ultra: http://www.wdc.com/fr/products/products.aspx?id=1000

I hope this helps :)

The My Passport is the best because it has more color choices and automatic file backup options, and you can set a password.
The Element is worth it if you just want a simple external hard drive
but they are both of very good quality.

Otherwise, in terms of hardware, do you know if these 2 drives are identical?
Thank you.

Hello HD,

Just as Daenerys_WD has already mentioned in her message, the WD My Passport has hardware encryption, whereas the WD Elements is free from this feature: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=YAasLR. In this line of thought, we could say that the two are not identical. However, both are USB 3.0 (the USB 3.0 standard is backwards compatible: establishing a USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 connection and vice versa is entirely possible).

@HD, are there any particular aspects that you're interested in? If you would like to know additional details, feel free to let me know :)

I'll keep an eye on the topic :)
A+
