    check if by tapping the F10 key or ALT+F10 at startup you can access the recovery partition

    I managed to get into Recovery by tapping F10... I'm waiting... :)

    WARNING: do you have nothing to save? (personal documents etc...)

    you should have the choice in the recovery partition

    1) restore to factory settings

    2) restore the operating system and back up user data

    I chose option 2)
    so normally user data is not affected...

    I'm still waiting, I think this might take 1 hour... can you confirm?

    if you pass by here again, since you no longer have the backup DVDs, you can burn them

    via the recovery partition

    take DVD-Rs (you'll need 3)

      Electrician by training, I confirm that it is directly connected to the 230V network and it doesn't go through an inverter... :)

      It's progressing again; new successive screens are displaying with progress bars indicating advancement from 0 to 100%, and the indicators on the keyboard are lighting up (the one indicating CAPS LOCK and the one indicating the switch to numeric).
      So no worries, it's just slow...
