Good evening.
Belgacom, the Belgian telecommunications operator, sold me a modem-router-hub-wifi from the Siemens Santis brand, visible at http://www.belgacom.be/enterprises/gallery/content/products/documents/others/fr/tech_siemens_fr.pdf?divisionGallery=null
Do you want to know more?
The manual and the CD-ROM provide extremely limited information.
Siemens does not recognize its young products, although it is stated that Siemens support could one day provide firmware upgrades.
This is a small box that contains the modem and the Ethernet hub for 4 lines at 1à/100Mbit/sec, but also accepts laptops equipped with WLAN interfaces, probably to the Wifi 802.11b standard.
My problems began when I dared to ask questions:
Is there a firewall software? I found the answer myself:
Yes, and it is highly configurable, in IN and OUT, by range of TCP/IP addresses (and by protocol, I believe).
I bought the external USB adapter Siemens Santis (unknown on all Siemens sites, I only know that it is equipment from the Far East and not from Germany or Switzerland).
The seller made an idiotic speech saying that it was the modem for desktop computers, and not for laptops, which must buy the PCMCIA model. To reinforce this, his brother came to drown me in technical jargon claiming that it required 3.6 volts and therefore it wouldn’t work on laptops. He must have confused it with a Nokia charger… Quickly to recycling…
The boxes were torn and taped.
I wanted to pay, they asked for my date of birth!
They demanded that I give my phone number!
What is this? The second largest database in Belgium after the Ministry of Finance!

I'm back with my treasure, open my gifts under the tree, thanks granddad, and I plug all this in.
The little adapter installs like a charm and above all, I don't set anything sophisticated, just the default connections, without encryption or anything. I turn on the hub and configure my TCP/IP stack, to fall within the range of the configurable router at 192.168.1.1
I read the statistics and discover that the Wireless LAN section is lagging. I call the free assistance service at 0800 33700 which only forwards me to the paid service 0900 / 100 25 and the meter is running. It's running fast, too fast for equipment bought for 199 and 79 euros.
The lady of the house having popped into a Belgacom store, they had pulled the wool over her eyes and sold her the luxury subscription at 55.5 euros per month since she had the misfortune to mention that she was going to connect two PCs one day. Excuse me, while it’s offered for 20 or 25 euros in France!
So I try to connect the ADSL telling myself that if the WiFi connection wasn't working, it was because of that.
The technical support tells me that the WLAN and LAN sections can talk directly even without the ADSL. Well yes, there’s no such thing as silly questions!
And since it’s not working, technical support then starts to unveil their worries: they are even shooting themselves in the foot:
---> The range of 30 meters is particularly optimistic, if there are slightly reinforced floors, it won’t work, two floors is often too much, if it’s a long corridor it won’t work either. In short, bring the second PC close if you please.
This little link is going to cost me dearly!
---> They then tell me that the NAT router has been intentionally throttled to allow only four clients to connect to the ADSL. It's normal since their SKYNET ADSL offer visible on http://www.belgacom.be/enterprises/cds/jsp/dynamic/product.jsp?detailPage=hbs_adsl_bus_wireless&dcrName=hbs_adsl_bus is designed for 1 to 4 PCs. I attempt to explain to them that their modem is available for sale at FNAC at the same price and that nothing obliges me to subscribe to them once I have purchased this equipment.
They still have that old mentality of a state company without competition to whom you have to speak politely and thank them for coming so quickly.
Ultimately, my premonition from the day before is confirmed: one WiFi broadcasts, the other receives but Windows doesn’t know how to establish sharing, I just saw the name of the other host appear. Even at 20 cm distance. And I don't know if it's the router or the USB adapter that is the cause.
They tell me to open a technical ticket using my date of birth, the ADSL subscription number, and my phone number... to proceed with more in-depth tests.
And tired of the battle, I hang up.

Episode three, the return!
I return to the shopping center TV shop in Woluwé where the TV was waiting for me, everything was clean, shiny and there were 15 people polishing the deck of the boat. We were waiting for the higher-ups to make an appearance among the common folk to inaugurate the new brand logo (which replaces that ugly turquoise skull we had to see in our streets for five years, immortalized by a satirical site BElgaCON that, of course, got into trouble but is still downloadable at http://www.avotrebondroit.com/ LOL...)
In short, I feel out of place in this porcelain store. I say that it’s not working, that I lost my money in the jackpot, that I traveled 100 km for nothing. I try to ask for a technician instead of my handsome leading man. And I ask him to quickly test it. Nothing is planned. He’s just taken one more course. Meanwhile, my salesman never told me that he would be limited to 4 positions when he should have. I tell them that it should be written on the lid of the box.
I explain that I want a refund, and as luck would have it, Dirk Frimout descending from his orbital station pressing at the gate, I got it fast!!!
Thank you, (it’s probably the HAM Spirit, eaulive)

cq cq Belgium!
P.S.
Who is Dirk Frimout? He is the first Belgian astronaut, a scientist from ESTEC hired by Belgacom for a new "New Technologies" department created for him, who consciously or unconsciously resembles Professor Tornasol, see http://www.bide-et-musique.com/song/1758.html
He is also a radio amateur (http://users.skynet.be/on1cau/qso.htm)
Apparently, to reach the astronomical salary that his new position required, they gave him a fictitious seniority of 150 years in the old civil servant curves that the former RTT employees were part of!
I met him; he was 20 minutes late and that impression of a sunflower seed has stayed with me. His lieutenants had already cleared the ground.
The king ennobled him just like Eddy Mercks, here's a bit of fresh blood in an ocean of blue blood!
I discover with astonishment that he is certainly not the person we were waiting for since on http://belgique.gov.be/abtb/science/fr_60301.htm it says he lost his position in 1998...
No one is irreplaceable according to the established saying.

>The WIFI standard exists and ensures a certain compatibility. However, there are models that operate at 22Mbit/sec. There are models at 22Mbit/sec. On the Siemens, if you enable the WEP encryption service, the speed will drop automatically to 5Mbit/sec or even less.
To prevent unauthorized access to your network, you must list exhaustively all the MAC addresses of all the WIFI adapters. Articles have been written on your favorite site about this

Hi,
I also bought the same device + a PCMCIA card to install the system on a laptop.
The card configuration was easy, but the router was a different story.
In the end, I asked the IT department at the company where I work, and the problem was resolved very quickly.
I think it shouldn't be too much of a problem for a true professional.
However, don't expect much from Belgacom. The worst part in my case is that the device is sold by Belgacom and my ADSL subscription is with Tiscali. Neither wanted (or could) answer my questions.
In terms of quality, frankly, I have nothing to complain about. It's effective. I can walk anywhere in the house, and everything works well. The speed is even much higher than what I had with a USB modem. However, I tested the device at a friend's house, who plans to invest in the same technology but whose old Ardennes house has 90 cm thick walls (!). It works, but not everywhere.
Good luck...

85 cm at my place!
Actually, I came across a broken game, and with only a USB adapter in addition to the router, I couldn't really diagnose the problem; I would have needed a second Wifi adapter, like a pcmcia, but in the store, they are just sellers of my two...
You did well to choose Tiscali! In Belgium, they are responsive and efficient. And for a new subscription, the first three months will be €19.5, then €35, which is cheaper than Skynet and Telenet.
I think I will buy back the same item they took from me and give it another shot.
Actually, it's not complicated and the stores don't know that in this Siemens router there is the most complete firewall there is in the range of all these little in-the-hub-box routers.
It's true that the firewall offers pre-set protection levels, but that's not my cup of tea; you can actually configure it completely and separately by IP range, by Port, and by flow direction. However, the trace logs are insignificant compared to Zone Alarm or Sygate software.

I will continue the saga. I also bought one at Belgacom and unfortunately my subscription is with Planet Internet (now Scarlet). Same ping pong game...
I installed everything without any problems, in 5 minutes everything was working well, 3 days later, I plug in the modem and there, the little LED indicating that there was an initialization problem stayed lit, no more modem, that’s it. My troubles then began, I lost half a day going from Belgacom to Scarlet, Belgacom not wanting to do anything because I didn't have a subscription with them and Scarlet couldn't do anything because they hadn't sold me the modem and don't know it. (I believe that's called free competition).
Finally, after some heated discussions, and several trips to the store, I managed to get it exchanged.
I came home, reinstalled it, still just as easy (even the firewall configuration, by the way). And boom, the next day I wanted to turn it on. Again, the same problem.
Lost quite a bit of time again, and I managed to get it exchanged. The service for disruptions saw a little short circuit on my line. A week later a technician came, and after 30 minutes said everything was fine but since he didn't know this modem he would ask someone else to come by.
Which happened unexpectedly a week later. Two guys worked, changed the telephone line from the terminal because they couldn't reconfigure it on our terminal. Current result, I'm not sure the short circuit is fixed and my phone number is no longer visible when I call.
I contacted the disruptions again to check and give me certainty that the short circuit is gone. They were supposed to call me back 15 minutes later, it's been 5 days since I've been waiting for their call...
What am I going to do? Try my 3rd modem and risk frying it too???
For the record, I had the little Alcatel Speedtouch USB before which never had any problems...

Dear M&M,
You found out how to configure the firewall of the Siemens Santis modem router. Well done.
Would you be so kind as to tell me how I should do it?
Thanks in advance.

Hello!
I am the happy owner of an Alcatel SpeedTouch USB ADSL modem as well as a connection with Skynet. So far, no problems! However, I am about to acquire this famous Siemens Santis (router + USB adapter for the desktop and PCMCIA for the laptop) and I have tons of questions! I was able to find some answers on the Belgacom website but also on the Siemens website (BUT the Swiss one, huh ;-) ).
To continue my search, I would like to find the manual for this famous router (and adapters). I don't know if it's possible to find it before buying.
If someone could help me in my quest before I dive into buying this router.
The additional question... Does it also work on Linux? (Mandrake 9.1?). THANK YOU!!!

Famous? This is not a famous router.
It's a Wifi 11Mbit/sec while we are currently running at 54MBit/sec, so it's an end of the line, a dead-on-arrival product.
Moreover, it has been throttled by Belgacom to only allow 4 address translations, meaning 4 PCs or Linux, while others let up to 254 PCs work!
Additionally, the Siemens Santis router and its counterpart Pcmcia do not allow for passing through two floors! The range is microscopic. So ask the right questions to your Skynet seller. Ask him about the return rate and the percentage of dissatisfied customers.
Turn to serious hardware: Dlink 624 (AirPlus XtremeG http://www.dlink.com/products/airxtremeg.asp) or SMC2804WBR (http://www.smc-europe.com/fr/products/wirel.html#) for example.

What would we do without some people? I wonder because when you don't know this wireless technology very well, you could easily be tempted by this offer from Belgacom. However, I compared it with the D-Link and SMC models you suggested and I'm quite disappointed. Not only can you get better quality for a lower price!
Indeed, I took a look at the websites of those manufacturers (much better designed than Siemens'!) and I'm almost convinced.
BUT Here's the thing, I came across another site http://www.ldlc.be/fiche/PB00016792.html and it bothered me a bit... Indeed, how does it work if they say there is no modem in the router?
My question finally comes! I read the information on this very site. Correct me if I'm wrong: The router is plugged in with the power supply (normal) and to the ADSL line. Then, you connect a PCI card (or PCMCIA) to the remote computer from the line. Is that all there is to it or what?
Pleeeease HELP ME!
LOL
A big thank you in advance!

Yes, the only advantage of the Siemens (along with its firewall which I liked) is that the modem is included. So with the Dlink 624, you need to buy a separate modem that outputs its signal over Ethernet, like the Alcatel Speedtouch Home (if you search on this site CCM, you will see that we can switch it to Pro). There are also other routers with the built-in modem. I can't remember which model. You can even find ADSL modems that are bi-mode: Ethernet and USB. I should look it up...
Note that in case of lightning, it's often the modem that gets fried, so if you put all your eggs in one basket, the big basket gets roasted.
But this argument is worth nothing because you never know where and when lightning will strike.

OK, it's fine... I was also wondering how it would go. I noted the note from Carrefour Belgium. Thank you.
I would like to know... a modem that outputs via Ethernet is this one: http://www.ldlc.be/fiche/PB00015291.html? Would it work with the DI-624???
Thanks again!

Yes, but be careful, I read on http://www.ldlc.be/fiche/PB00015291.html that it is incompatible with unbundled lines, we don't have that in Belgium but in France, you need to ask the question. You will also need a filter to place on the phone line to separate the low frequency for the phone and the high frequency that carries the ADSL.

Hello,
I just read your comments AFTER placing an order for a Siemens modem-router from Belgacom and 3 USB adapters. You scared me... but we'll see at the unboxing...
However, I have a question right away: we talk about "Ethernet cabling" but it seems that you do NOT need an Ethernet card on each PC, just a USB port. Is that correct?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.
It's just an order, you can cancel a purchase within seven days after receipt, so here since you haven't received the merchandise yet, think twice.
With Wi-Fi, you don't have to use wiring. But since the speed will be miserable with your 11Mbit/s (max. theoretical but in practice when you enable the encryption system your speed decreases even more) between the PCs, we recommend connecting the closest PCs directly via Ethernet. You know, a 100Mbit/sec Ethernet card costs 15 euros and often this Ethernet port is already present on motherboards, for desktop computers and even laptops.
As for the cables themselves, they are American telephone wire at 40 cents per meter or they are sold fully made for 3 euros.
More concerning for the future is the Siemens-Belgacom limit of 4 PCs, not one more. With Wi-Fi, you could share the costs with someone close, but if you reach 5 it won't work.

Hello,
I am also looking for how to access the Firewall settings?
There is indeed a box for "advanced configuration," but it requires a user "webadmin" and a password?
I am using XP Pro, but I did not set a password during the installation of XP.
Thank you for your response.
