Why is there a red exclamation point in front of "message sent"?

Hello,

When I receive the "message sent" notification from a recipient, it is accompanied by a red exclamation mark. What does that mean? Has my recipient read the message or have they blocked my number?

Configuration: Mac OS X Lion (10.7) / Firefox 30.0

    Is the message in question grayed out?

    If yes, it means it could not be sent.
