An ISO file is an "image" file, which could be compared to a CD or DVD among other things.

For example, all files and folders of a game will be extracted and grouped into an ISO file.

To open them, you need to use software like Daemon Tools for instance.

This software will create a virtual drive on your workstation.

After that, you just need to right-click on the ISO icon / Open with / DaemonTools

An ISO file is a simple copy of a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray (film or game) without any modifications.

I'll give you a simple example.

If you download a movie, you might find it in AVI, MP4, MKV, etc., but you only have the movie with sometimes the choice of languages and subtitles.

On the other hand, if you buy a DVD and create a disk image (an ISO, that is), you will have the entire DVD. The movie, of course, with all the languages and subtitles in all languages, but also the menus, extras, etc.

If your DVD is 9GB, your ISO will also be 9GB, unlike the movie you downloaded, which will vary in size depending on its length or encoding quality.
