How to reinstall Mac OS on MacBook Pro from a DVD

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my 15" unibody Macbook Pro from late 2008. My hard drive completely fried, so I bought a new one (LaCie Rikiki 1T which I dismantled). However, I'm having trouble installing my OS on it from the DVD.

When I try to boot from the disk, I get a circle with a line through it after a few minutes.

I managed to get the Apple logo and the spinning loading icon once (out of three attempts), then my Macbook suddenly shut down...

I don't know how to proceed...

Can someone please help me?

    Hello,

    Is the installation disk the one that came originally with the MBP?
    If so, just insert it into the drive and start the Mac while holding down the C key until the startup is complete.
    Then, you need to format the new hard drive using Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.

    Reminder of the disk formatting procedure from a Mac:
    Launch "Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility "
    Select the "Partition" tab
    Select the hard drive by clicking on the first icon, which indicates the size of the drive
    Choose "One Partition" (or two or more) for the "Volume Configuration" field ( do not leave this field set to "Current" or the other fields will remain grayed out)
    Give a name to your future hard drive (e.g. "Macintosh HD")
    Choose " MacOS Extended (Journaled) " for the "Format" field
    Click on "Options" and choose:
    - " GUID " for an Intel Mac
    - " Apple Partition Map " for a PowerPC Mac
    Start the formatting by clicking on " Apply "

    You go from "Disk Utility" after selecting it from the menu bar, as mentioned at the beginning.

    And then, depending on your original OS, here are some installation tips:

    install Mac OS X 10.6

    install or reinstall Mac OS X 10.5

    If you have a prohibited sign at the start, it means your installation disk is not the original one, so what is it? Explain as best as you can what you are doing exactly.

    I will try that tonight because I will have another Mac on which I can partition the external hard drive...

    I hadn't done that!

    Well, I just tried but I'm getting an error message... The Mac is unable to partition or format it...

    Is there any way to do it via PC?

      And that you answer my original question, namely whether the disk you are trying to start this MBP from is indeed the original disk that came with it or, failing that, a universal disk with a version of Mac OS X that is supported by this Mac.
      Your problem is not detailed clearly enough. You say:

      If I believe what you provide as a reference, your Mac was delivered with Mac OS X 10.5.5 (or 10.5.6). What is noted on the installation disk in your possession that you are trying to boot from?

      Actually, I bought this used Mac... It came with Snow Leopard (not the gray CD). And I was trying with my sister's MacBook installation DVD :s.
      I removed the hard drive from her enclosure and installed it in place of the old one ;-).

      I have now managed to reformat it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using Disk Utility thanks to the Snow Leopard CD + C key at startup.

      However, and this is my big problem, during the OS installation, my MacBook shuts down abruptly in the middle of the process. Always around the same point...

      I had already tried to fix it a few months ago but to no avail!

      I remember thinking at the time that it could either be a power issue or a wiring issue between the hard drive and the motherboard.

      I'm afraid you're just going to mess things up with that Mac!

      A Mac, shipped with an installation disk, cannot, under any circumstances, boot from an installation disk from another Mac that is not strictly from the same series.
      Hence the possibility of using a universal disk of a system accepted by that Mac.
      Are you sure you formatted that hard drive properly?
      Did you follow the installation advice provided in the help for installing Mac OS X 10.6, the link above?

      Yes, the formatting worked well.

      I am indeed using a universal disk... The snow leopard (with the picture of the snow leopard). The installation starts and everything is fine, but it stops at 4/5 of the process.

      Then, if I turn on the Mac afterwards, a folder with a question mark appears...

      Should I run an AHT?

      I had done it in the past and I got this message:
      - Bootcachecontrol: unable to open /var/db/bootcache.playlist: 2 No such file or directory
      followed by a few other lines (see photo...)

      I’m not sure if that can help...
