How to install PLC in another building?

Hello,

I would like to know if it is possible to install a network in a building other than the one with my Livebox.

Here's the situation: the Orange Livebox 2 is located in the main house, but I have a renovated barn where I would like to install Wi-Fi. In the past, we managed to install two powerline adapters and thus transmit the internet connection to the barn. Since then, we have changed the box 3 times and I do not know how to configure my pair of Netgear XE104 85Mbps powerline adapters with the Livebox.

I also have a router, but I don’t know either how to configure it so that it emits a Wi-Fi signal so that we can connect in the barn.

Do you have any idea how to proceed?

    Hi

Are the two buildings on the same electrical panel?

      Hi Pierre,

Thanks for your response. The two buildings are on the same electricity meter, but not on the same panel. I just performed a test: in the main house, the "Power" (green) and "Powerline" (blue) indicators stay on continuously. The third indicator, "Ethernet," blinks when it is used.

In the barn, only the Power indicator stays on. When I plug in the CPL box, the Powerline indicator lights up but goes off after 1 second. For good.

    Hello,
For the wifi, how many meters separate the house from the barn?
For the PLC, you just have to plug an Ethernet cable into an RJ45 port on the Livebox, then connect it to the PLC box.
I only know liveplug, but perhaps Netgear also requires a mode like pairing...

We should REPLY and not "add comments" otherwise it’s anarchy in messages.

Me, I have a garden shed at 100m, like this and it works very well... But indeed, there is a pairing operation so that the dialogue works well between these two and not with a neighbor... If they are not "married together," it doesn’t work.

You should have a manual or a small CD or the manufacturer’s website to get the information... it can be done from the PC or by pressing a combination of keys..

I also think that 85 Mbps is fine for internet but not for watching video.

On the other hand, it is clearly stated:
    Only for
    Windows 98/ME/2000/XP

The Mac may be a problem, especially in the case of data encryption.

You should try this setup on two outlets that are in the same room, just to see if it works over a short distance... And when it’s working, you move it to your barn..

    Hello everyone.

In the end I solved the problem by buying a Netgear universal Wi-Fi repeater on Amazon. Great quality, delivered in 24 hours and the problem was solved.

Apparently, powerline adapters couldn’t be used because the electrical panels are different...

    Thanks anyway for your responses!

    Hello,

Indeed, with PLCs, the problem is the quality and proper continuity of the house electrical network... For it to work... Fine.

You must not be on power strips with multiple outlets and used outlets... You must not have a ground fault... Or very, very little on the other equipment...
Some differential circuit breakers are to be avoided... Prefer the panel with true fuses to mini-thermal circuit breakers....Etc..etc..
A PLC on the same outlet as a fridge = error at each start... Same with air conditioning and heat pumps.
Wiring in continuity, no cross-sectional loss and PLCs as close as possible to the point of arrival... it doesn't plug in like a coffee maker.

In short, the ideal is a new and well-wired house with devices that respect power and isolation.

There you go, you solved your problem in your own way, that’s good too.

    A+++

    Hello,

the setup of the powerline adapters is exactly the same..

    - I think you should first connect to the barn's powerline adapter with an Ethernet cable to your PC, to make sure it works before going further.

Then you connect your router to the barn's powerline adapter, on one of the 4 RJ45 ports, not on WAN, and it should broadcast WiFi...

Now you need to configure your PC to match the router's wifi... Key, security etc.. which doesn't exist in wired.

      Hello,

The problem is that I have a MacBook Air, and therefore no Ethernet port to test the wired connection. The goal is therefore to create a Wi-Fi network so that I can connect to it using my MacBook Air.
