How to put LibreOffice icons on the desktop Solved

Question

Hello,  I know Windows but I don't know MacOS at all.  A friend has an Apple MacOS computer but she is not familiar with computers.  I just installed LibreOffice for her. I restarted the computer.  When I click on a .docx, Writer launches, same with Calc. That's a good thing.  But I don't have an icon for LibreOffice or for Writer, Calc, and Impress. If I right-click on the desktop (like with Windows), I'm not offered the option to create a new document with these applications. So, I can't create new documents.  Can someone tell me how to make the icons appear or how to create a new document?  Thanks. Hello,  To create a shortcut accessible from the desktop, it’s in the Dock that it happens. The Dock is the bar at the bottom of the desktop window. (you can enable its hiding and place it on the sides) https://support.apple.com/fr-fr/guide/mac-help/mh35859/mac   You simply drag the application into the Dock. A shortcut accessible from there will be created, but the application will remain in its place in the Applications folder. Hello Sanspseudo,  Thank you but it doesn't work.  When I go to file / new, there is no arrow next to new.  Moreover, I've noticed that when I double-click on a .docd or .xlsx, it's no longer Writer or Calc that opens but something I don't recognize: iworks or something like that. What's going on?

Are we talking about Libre Office...? This question arises because of the terms used (Writer, Calc, etc...)  Is a valid version of Libre Office installed?  The correct version, in French, can be found here: https://fr.libreoffice.org  To uninstall the current version, just drag the application into the AppCleaner window http://www.freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/  Once the correct version is in place, to make Libre Office the default application that opens the file, simply select a .doc, .xls, .docX, etc. document and right-click on it to "Get Info...", then in the following window, under "Open with," choose Libre Office, and then click "Change All" to make it valid for all documents of the same type.  -- Have a good day or good night..:). It's good LibreOffice. Writer is the word processor of LibreOffice (=Word) and Calc is its spreadsheet program (=Excel). If I right-click on a toto.docx or a toto.odt and then "open with," it only offers me "Text edit." I think my LibreOffice has disappeared because I restarted the computer...

Yes.  I found a tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZHYCpWp2FE  I couldn't do it because I didn't put LibreOffice in the applications. Now it's done and it works.  I still have one problem, I downloaded the language pack, I launched it to convert my LibreOffice to French but I'm told to go to the preferences of LibreOffice to change the language... I don't know how to get to those preferences. Do you know?

Well yes, it seemed so obvious to me that I didn't think to mention it. Applications to be launched must always be placed in the Applications folder.  Tip: read the beginner links about Mac that I provided earlier :)  In reality, once the language pack is installed, it's unnecessary to choose the language. It will automatically be in French. A little additional advice, do not install Java. This is for better security of the Mac. So do not enable Java in Libre Office. It's unnecessary    -- Have a good day, or good night..:). Francis

Thank you both.  I launched the language pack and I'm still in English... In the preferences I have user interface: default English and no other options locale setting: default French  I don't know what this locale setting is for because everything is written in English. What should I do?

You don't have this:    If that's the case, the installation was done incorrectly.  Uninstall everything with AppCleaner as mentioned above  To uninstall the current version, simply drag the application into the AppCleaner window http://www.freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/   Get the correct versions of Libre Office here:  http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/4.0.4/mac/x86/LibreOffice_4.0.4_MacOS_x86.dmg  and the languages  http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/4.0.4/mac/x86/LibreOffice_4.0.4_MacOS_x86_langpack_fr.dmg  Reinstall everything.  -- Have a good day, or good night..:). Thank you, but it's strange, isn't it? Mac OS doesn't have what it needs to uninstall a program by itself? It bothers me to install a new program; it's not my computer, and I don't know Mac OS. Isn't there an easier way?

The advantage of AppCleaner is that it also uninstalls preference files and possibly other related ones.  But in this case, we can also simply throw LibreOffice in the trash and empty the trash.  For the installation that needs to be done next, first install the application itself. Launch it for the first time, then quit it.  Only then do you launch the language pack.  This procedure is cleaner and often LibreOffice reports that it is damaged if both installations are done in a row without having opened it the first time.  Have a good day, or good night..:).
