Hello there,

I have done quite a bit of research online and I've come across a lot of different information, so I'm a bit lost.

In the context of publishing a novel, I know that the number of pages varies depending on the publisher, but I would like to know roughly what the minimum word count is for a novel.

I get confused between characters, words, with or without spaces, and so I'm not quite sure anymore.

Thank you!

    Hi,

    Approximately:
10,000 to 70,000 characters (including spaces): short stories
    70,000 to 220,000 characters: novellas
    220,000 and above: novels

But it also depends on the construction of the story; you can very well have a story around 200,000 characters and that can be a novel, just as a text of 100,000 characters can be a short story...

Maybe start by writing; you can worry about its classification later.
I hope this helps you =)

    Thank you very much!

So if I understand correctly, a sign is a character and not a word?

Actually, I've already started, I'm at about 35,000 words, and I'm getting a bit lost.

Yes, signs are characters. We can also count in words, but I find that much less precise.

      Best of luck then ;)
