Retrieve Thunderbird address book

by now I think you have found it.
But if not, it's very simple:

On XP:
Copy everything in the directory (Ctrl A, then Ctrl C for example):
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\49xse5ua.default

And paste it back in the same directory on the new PC (Ctrl V).

On Vista:
It should be, if I remember correctly, the directory:
C:\user

For backups, it’s practical to save this folder. Because it's easily reusable later on.
Note that the Application Data folder is a hidden folder, so you need to show hidden folders to find it. Personally, I back up the entire Application Data folder because I also have my Firefox bookmarks stored there.

If it's just for the address book, there’s an even simpler way:
Go to the address book then => Tools => Export, choose the LDIF format. Then save this file on a shared folder or USB stick. AddressBook.ldif for example.
Then on the new PC, Tools => Import => Address book => Text to recover the same file.

And there you go...

Thank you for your tip regarding a Windows crash. Personally, I follow the same principle with a complete profile. I think it's simpler and also that you can find bookmarks just in case. It's obvious that there are often several methods to achieve the same result.

are you on Windows XP?
On XP, you need to enable the display of hidden folders because it is a hidden folder.

Tools => Folder Options => View tab => Show hidden files and folders.

It all depends on the folder that Thunderbird points to.
Before making any changes, go to Thunderbird/Tools/account settings.
Here you will know where the address books, local folders, and message storage are located...
Sometimes we install or modify without noting it down, and when it crashes, oh dear, oh dear!...

The first response was the best for me, if you have some experience with searching in Windows Explorer (any system including W.10):

for safety, we close the "thunderbird" app.
we start the search for "abook" in C:, save the file to a USB drive, and go to the other computer. We do the same search and copy the "abook" file into the found folder. If it asks to replace the file, it means we're in the right folder: we answer yes.

You find the complete address book with its subdivisions.
