Mac screen changing color on startup

Solved

Hello,

I have had a Mac iBook G4 for 2 years. This morning when I tried to start my Mac, the startup seemed normal but nothing appeared, I now have a "slideshow" of gray, dark gray, green, blue, red, and black screens.

I tried to put in the installation CD while rebooting with the C key... Apparently, nothing happens (the CD seems to start, then nothing!!).

I don't have a second screen (I will test that tomorrow).

Do you have any suggestions to help resolve this issue?

Thank you in advance,
Best regards,
Marie

I had the same problem three days ago with my iBook G4: black screen, or a screen changing from gray to black, like a dark tide.
You need to restart your Mac by holding (Command) and s at the same time.
You will then see a series of text lines appear on a black background (about twenty lines). Then after the # sign, type fsck -y (don’t forget the space after k). Note: this is valid on a QWERTY keyboard. For AZERTY, you type: fsck )y

Your Mac will run a series of tests and repairs. You will then see the message ****** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED********

You then type fsck -y several times until the message no longer appears.
After #, type: reboot and then send (the enter key).

I hope it works for you. For me, it restarted but got stuck on the Apple logo.

Hello,

Thank you for this solution, I went abroad and upon my return! Surprise, no more problems. I still rushed to clean my disks, etc. (which I had never done in two years thinking it happened automatically on Macs (but I hadn't understood everything)).

Thanks again and have a nice day,

Marie

Hello,

I know that my problem is not the same as what I just read, but I am really, really confused.
Two days ago my computer was working very well, no problems were detected, the sites and programs I was using are the same ones I always use. But yesterday, when I started my computer (iMac G5 from 2005-2006), everything was fine until my screen froze. Little colored squares in blue, black, red, white, gray, etc. appeared all over the screen and everything got stuck. Even the mouse displays such a square. I don’t see what it could be, as the programs and sites I use are still the same. I think maybe my little nephews clicked on a link that caused a virus infection; I don’t know how it happened. I unplugged the cables and plugged everything back in and restarted the iMac, it turns on but a few minutes later it starts freezing again with those squares of all colors. A few minutes ago I restarted the computer and the squares became more obstructive and much more colorful. Yesterday, it was able to start normally. Today it still has these squares even on startup.

Please help me

P.S.: My computer is 2-3 years old and I had a 3-year warranty that, I believe, expired a month or a few weeks ago.

Thank youuuuuu

Hello everyone,

Thanks BoB,

That's indeed it, actually it's a ribbon cable issue that connects the screen and the keyboard.

The solution is to take it to a Mac store for repair. But as you said, if it falls back into place you look silly (that's what happened to me the day I was bringing it in for repair - after spending the whole weekend backing up my data using an external monitor!! Anyway, no other solutions because after a while, it becomes more and more frequent and tapping didn't work in my case!!).

Thanks for all your help,

Have a great rest of the day,

Marie

Hi, there may be the same issue as with the G3, and for this, Apple has implemented a warranty extension program where the repair is fully covered.

Hello,

This response may not be useful in this case, but perhaps for everyone who will come across this thread through G**gle or another search engine.
I encountered the same problem with my iBook G4 recurrently, the first time after returning from a flight. I open it, I hear the characteristic sound of waking up... and nothing. Or rather, yes: a succession of screens in different colors, at regular intervals - white, gray, red, green, blue... Aside from this screen issue, everything seemed to be working fine - which was confirmed when I connected it to an external monitor. So it was indeed the screen.
The most surprising part is that a week later, everything was working normally again. The iBook came out of its hallucination trip as abruptly as it had entered it. A month later, I had almost forgotten about this story when bam! It happened again.
My internet searches yielded nothing, most people who encountered the problem saw it disappear suddenly, like here with Marie, and did not pursue their investigations.

It was only recently that I thought about what I believe to be the resolution of the mystery: for me, the "colorful slideshow" is a sign of a ***temporary interruption of the signal transmission between the iBook and the screen***, related to wear and tear on the cable that connects it to the video card. In plain terms, something is getting stuck somewhere. And the colorful slideshow is a sort of "screensaver" of the screen when it is all alone, left to itself.
This explains why the problem sometimes suddenly disappears: you just have to tap in the right place to unstick the cable, which can then transmit data again - like a garden hose that gets pinched and then released.
It is probably possible to remove the iBook's cover to check the wear on the cable in question, to avoid the problem recurring. I admit I have not done this, and I just tap it, in case my little beast feels like eating mushrooms again..

"hope this will help,

BoB

I just had the same issue... and it actually works again by opening and tilting the hood in a certain way to make the connection. For now, it's working again....
