Hello,
I have an HTC ONE S smartphone, Android version 4.1.1, HTC Sense 4+, and I use Handcent for my SMS/MMS.
For the past few weeks, all my SMS conversations suddenly disappear without warning. This has happened several times, sometimes even twice in the same day. The worst part is that even in the phone's default SMS app, the messages are gone. I've checked the options and re-downloaded Handcent, but nothing works.
I do notice that this issue started after I updated the phone.
I know there are apps to back up SMS, but that's not the solution I'm looking for; I want to stop these random deletions.

Same problem with Go SMS, 2 deletions yesterday... And SMS Backup is good but I can't restore the messages...

Anyway, if my memory serves me right, it seems you could save SMS directly to your mailbox without applications on your HTC. Try this: uninstall Handcent and GO SMS if you still have them. Check the settings of your messaging app for the maximum limit of SMS you can keep, for example, 200 or 100 before it deletes them…
