Ico saved

Hello,

I can't save my icons, even though I've installed ico sauve just for that! It's really frustrating because every time I restart, the icons are in an indescribable mess, and ico sauve can't put them back exactly as they were!

I must have probably forgotten something, but what? Which kind soul could help me, knowing that I'm also useless with computers?

Configuration: Windows 7 / Chrome 23.0.1271.95

Thank you for your quick response, even though I didn't understand everything!

Anyway, I deleted ICO SAVE... and instead, I reorganized all the icons alphabetically, from left to right and top to bottom (that's what Windows 7 uses)... THIS WAY, Windows 7 always puts them back in the right place...

THANK YOU AGAIN IN ANY CASE.

Hello
This topic reminded me of this old software I reinstalled. It doesn't seem to work on Windows 7. It talks about systray, whereas this location that used to be to the right of the taskbar no longer exists. No menu in sight.

Thank you JMWURTH... so if I understand correctly, ICO SAUVE is an old software? Indeed, I can confirm that it works for me about 80%, which makes me reorganize 20% of the icons every day! Not great! But I haven't found another one, except for a system in German that I couldn't manage to install... What could I use to effectively replace ICO SAUVE, since I'm still struggling to have categorized icons with Windows 7?

I don't know of any other software. If there are too many icons, we can put those we use rarely in the trash.

Hi; IcoSauve works perfectly on Windows 7 x64.

Software name: IcoSauve v4.2.0.0
Description: Desktop backup and restoration
Compatibility: Windows 9x-Me-2K-XP-Vista-7
Section of the site: WINDOWS
Full link: www.ptorris.com/windows.php#icosauve

(I use it; and yes, we can surely add/improve functions.)

+

Tip: if F5 (refresh desktop) or launching the desktop causes a rearrangement; just close the desktop and reopen it, but remember to organize the icons first otherwise it’s useless or almost. IcoSauve does not prevent rearrangement; it acts automatically at times or manually (if we check the boxes in the menu and have saved the desktop still in the menu).

Note: the icon is in the systray; little arrow (or) next to the clock.

Note: organize and save the icons for each resolution.

+

Separate function:

Save to file; first close the icon to create a .reg file:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\IcoSauve\IcoSauve.exe" /EXPORT

"Save to file" is in the start menu ...

All resolutions are in the ".reg" file created ...
(The resolutions used ...)

(Warning, if a ".reg" file with the same date exists.)

Example:

--------------------------- IcoSauve --------------------------- Backup completed to: C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\IcoSauve_4.2.0.0_2012_12_21.reg --------------------------- OK ---------------------------

+

I want it too; actually, no; it’s brain m*/de:

"Windows 7. It talks about systray, while this location that used to be to the right of the taskbar, no longer exists."

"you can throw in the bin (ndr: the icons) those that are rarely used"

THANK YOU for your time

It’s true that I have a lot of icons, but I find it convenient to have them and I just wish they would stay in the order I’ve chosen... and well, it’s not that simple!

ico save I’m not sure it works because I sent an email to Pierre Torris, the creator I believe, and he sent me a standard reply, and I sent a SECOND explanatory email, without any response this time, as if he knew very well that it doesn’t work in certain cases!

Every time the computer restarts, the order has changed, I have to press the "restore desktop" button 6 or 7 times, ico save restores a bit, then a bit more, then another piece, and so on... and in the end, ico save puts back about 80% of the icons, I have to finish the job myself

Moreover, at certain moments (surely changes in resolution, well I don’t know) while I’m working on it, the icons change and likewise, ico save only puts back 80% of the icons!

I do have the ico save icon at the bottom right, near the clock and activated at startup

Every time I put the icons back in place, I press "save current desktop" and that’s what allows saving the 80%...

I don’t understand why it doesn’t work, and I’m not skilled with computers, but if someone is sure it works, please explain it to me as best as possible and I’ll gladly try

But I admit I’m getting tired of ico save, so if someone else knows a better software, I would gladly try that too...

Otherwise quick, thank you but for the "standalone function" part, I didn’t understand anything, so instead I tried to explain the problem

re

already observed:

"ico saves, restores a bit, then a bit more, then another piece, and so on..."

cause => there are icons that take the place of other icons; it interferes (like the game of Taquin). Eventually, place the two hidden files desktop.ini where there is nothing.

and for:

"every time I rearrange the icons, I click on "Save Current Desktop"

You stop clicking "!" and you organize your icons; then ... :

1 = do not place an icon in the top left; that’s where the icons come in.
2 = I indicated that you should log off and log back in; it saves (Windows).
3 = then (and before) you save = "Save Current Desktop" (IcoSauve).

+

You need to "Save Current Desktop" for each resolution; when the desktop switches, the icons are placed on the left. IcoSauve allows you to organize the icons.

+

The ".reg" file is used to copy the configuration from one account to another, and from one PC to another.
(Always have multiple admin accounts and one normal test account on a PC ...)

Pierre Torris is one of the best French freeware authors and has provided contributions that I have cited here. It seems that there is a problem with recent laptops. I do not have the icon in the bottom right. This is what some people referred to as the systray, while the rest of the bar is called the quick access bar.

In fact, the icon is indeed there in the systray!

ANGBER Posted messages 19 Status Member 3

I have no doubt about his skills, especially since I'm terrible at computers (and who, shame on me, doesn't even know what freeware is), but I prefer to read that there might be a problem with recent laptops (especially since I use a recent laptop) than to read that there are no issues at all...
ICO SAUVE is free, so we can't complain, and problems can happen to anyone, he should have told me!
It's a shame because the ICO SAUVE system seemed very good otherwise, but I now need to find an alternative.
Do you know how Windows classifies icons, and do you think it's possible to place the icons where I want them, while also having the ability to add or remove them as I wish, in such a way that they don't move when the computer shuts down and restarts?
THANK YOU for your patience.

Good evening,
With a right click on the desktop, Display, do you have "Align to grid" checked, not "Auto arrange"?
Another option, try changing the wallpaper.
0
ANGBER Posted messages 19 Status Member 3

Good evening The framework (that's a funny name)!
"Align to grid" is checked, yes, and "show desktop items" and "automatically arrange" are unchecked!
Changing the wallpaper, I don't know what that is, sorry, but even so it seems simpler to me to understand how Windows organizes its icons, and if there is any logic, for example an alphabetical order, I will adapt to position my icons according to their ORDER;;;
It should be so simple, and nowhere can you find an explanatory user manual!
0
Anonymous user

RE
Normally, they should stay where you placed them; there is no defined order in Windows.
Do you have a lot of icons on the desktop?
For the wallpaper, did you set a special one?
If not, to change it: http://www.clubic.com/windows-os/windows-7/aide-astuce-tuto/windows-7-comment-changer-mon-fond-d-ecran-2626.html

Well, Windows changes my order, and I don't know why... it's true that I have a lot of icons (126): maybe it doesn't like it!
I've never changed the wallpaper, so it shouldn't be coming from there, right?

Thanks for your help anyway, the framework!

RE
Yes, that's a lot.
First, try cleaning the IconCache file as indicated in this link.
https://support.microsoft.com/fr-fr/help/2422299/icons-are-not-displayed-for-certain-files-in-windows-7
For the wallpaper, if it’s one of Windows, I don’t think that’s the issue, but you can still try.
0
ANGBER Posted messages 19 Status Member 3

There you go, I've tried everything, but Windows keeps moving my desktop icons at its whim, and I don't like it at all;

in any case; thank you for the suggested leads about the framework...

RE
Try to reduce them, select one, hold down CTRL and scroll the mouse wheel.
Another option, try increasing the icon cache: http://partage-connaissance-informatique.over-blog.fr/article-accelerer-l-affichage-des-icones-du-bureau-de-windows-68716328.html

Thank you, I tried again without success... however, I just found a software called FENCES, which isn't even intended for my needs, and it currently works perfectly... FREE, moreover! It seems to be great, but I will wait for a day's use to confirm it to everyone.

Re: your software is neither free nor unrestricted; it's a trial version.

( fences (fæces, fèces ?) = http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/download.asp )

And how did you do it when you say you tried ...? Thank you please.
0
ANGBER Posted messages 19 Status Member 3

AH sorry if I gave wrong info, I’m probably on a trial version, (yes fences, it's stardock) and sooner or later they will ask me for money

in the meantime anyway, I’ve also become disillusioned, fences is (for my needs) a little better than ico sauve, but just barely! the icons only stay about 80% in order...

RE
I had this problem with XP, certainly due to some cleaning, a registry key that must have disappeared, I had scoured the entire internet for a solution, never found one.
The only solution I found was to create a new session with Administrator rights and to copy my profile over. It is possible to do this with Windows 7:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows?ui=en-US&rs=en-001&ad=US
http://www.forum-seven.com/forum/
To do this, if you have only one Administrator account on your PC, you need to create two others, which you will open at least once.
The first one will be the one you keep afterwards, and the second will be used for the maneuver, which you will delete afterwards.
Once you are sure you have recovered everything on your current account, you can delete it.
It doesn’t copy everything, take the time to check everything before deletion.

re ; HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop => TaskbarWinXP and Upgrade (= 1 ; "REG_DWORD") ; I have this under Windows 7 x64!

TaskbarWinXP contains the position of the icons apparently; it's in "REG_BINARY" format.

+

Rename / backup (export); HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE only maybe:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams

to (to restore or delete later depending on whether it works or not)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams_old

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams_old

then

Arrange the icons, press F5 (okay? it doesn't move?) log off, log back on.

Quick, sorry, I didn't see all your comments!

Oh dear! : "place 2 HIDDEN FILES desktop.ini where there is nothing"... is totally incomprehensible for my level!

However, it's good to know that the icons appear in the top left corner, so there always needs to be free space here, thanks..

"save the current desktop," that's what I've done with each change (I don't know what "resolution" is), but that doesn't stop ico save from modifying and "restore" only restores about 80%

AS FOR HAVING multiple accounts on a PC, I will keep the idea in mind; for now, I can't even manage with just one, but when I'm a little less of a beginner, I'll try, thanks too.

THANK YOU THE FRAME, yes it is quite possible that I have the same problem unfortunately! But I might just settle for fencers or saving icons, even if I have to put back more than 20 icons every day, because I don't feel up to your solution... maybe in the future... THANK YOU AGAIN IN ANY CASE.

ANGBER Posted messages 19 Status Member 3

Finally, I found a solution... IT'S IMPORTANT that those who have the same problem know that neither ico nor fencers are effective on Windows 7 64-bit... My solution was to understand how Windows classifies icons and to organize my classifications accordingly... I now have 124 icons perfectly organized as I want them and they no longer change...

Hello; IcoSauve is working very well:

Windows 7 x64 ...

I had (not just one, but anyway; the one I often see when typing / validating (at the top of the list) => bad <= in the start menu and updating manually every hour and quitting ...) a white icon; no problem in the properties but in the shortcut display (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, notably).

I tested a Microsoft fix tool, I selected other issues and icon problems.

+

I had NEVER seen this file before using the fix:

"C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\IconCache.db"

+

+

The icons could not be saved after using the fix by closing the session and F5 put the icons back to the left after using / launching IcoSauve. The fix forces a restart within 10 minutes of applying the fix; it displays an indication window after explorer is closed.

As mentioned earlier from memory (correct but with gaps), you just need to after repositioning the icons with IcoSauve, select all the icons or by groups and you need to move the icons (in a group, alone or in total) and then put them back in place; then you close the session and reopen it. F5 should no longer interfere and the icons are in place.

IcoSauve has its own backup system in the registry and does not modify the registry (the official locations for icon positions) when restoring the icon positions. There could be a special IcoSauve option to modify the registry temporarily (the official locations for icon positions).

You say: "I now have 124 icons perfectly organized as I want and they no longer change..." ; yes, well, change screen resolution before being assertive and return to the same resolution and indicate what you did if it works because it could help others. Thank you please.

Hi; I reused the Microsoft fix (checking everything this time) for my white icons without encountering the same icon positioning issue after using the Microsoft fix (but without definitive success actually this time too (unless I'm mistaken) and the first time) and I found another tool that worked for the white icons (to be used every time I suppose; but it’s faster to use than the Microsoft fix):

Icons return in the start menu.

+

However, before the 2nd use of the Microsoft fix and the Rebuild Icon Cache tool, the last 2 programs I installed (due to new available versions; minitool and easus for partitions) whose folders and shortcuts in the start menu are in "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs", were not in the start menu immediately, except for the shortcut with the icon in recent programs (Windows 7 x64 start menu); but no more icon when I installed/uninstalled a 3rd program to test and the 2 folders of the 2 programs were present in the start menu. sic. There is an issue with reading the icons and folders in "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"; bug = icon data stream + folders + the icon cache? In any case, Rebuild Icon Cache v0.7b by ~screeny05 on deviantART does fix the icons well.

To ensure that the icons return at every startup, you need to right-click on the desktop and uncheck align to grid.

A small Batch file to save the icons.
Sov IconeXP.bat
@echo off
Rem Save the key Pierre Torris in Softwar.reg
RegEdit /e "IcoSauve-JPierre-XP.reg" "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Pierre Torris\IcoSauve"

This will create a file IcoSauve-JPierre-XP.reg in the directory from which you launched it.
(It's HKEY_CURRENT_USER for me, but it can be HKEY_Users)

Another Batch file to run at startup.
@echo off
Xcopy ClocX.lnk "%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"
Xcopy IcoSauve.lnk "%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"

A Reg file to put in the context menu (right-click on desktop)
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\IcoSauve]
@="Save Desktop Icons"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\IcoSauve\command]
@="C:\\IcoSauve\\IcoSauve.exe"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\IcoSauve]
@="Save Desktop Icons"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\IcoSauve\command]
@="C:\\IcoSauve\\IcoSauve.exe"

Another batch to copy from one computer to another here (XP) to be run from the Icosauve directory on a USB stick for example.
Copy IcoSov.bat
@echo off
xcopy /i /E /S /C /K /H /R /y *.* c:\IcoSauve
xcopy IcoSauve.lnk "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\"

More or less the same thing for Windows 7 32 and 64 Bits, but if icosauve is already running.
Or already in the systray, then press CTRL ALT DEL to disable IcoSauve and restart it, it will work again.

A .vbs file --- SovIcônes Bureau X64.vbs
Set Sh = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
sh.Run "%comspec% /c REGEDIT /E ""Icosauve-Layout-X64.reg"" ""HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Pierre Torris\IcoSauve\1024x768""",0,true

For Windows 7 at startup launch:
Put in Démarrer.bat
@echo off
Xcopy ClocX.lnk "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"
Xcopy IcoSauve.lnk "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"

If this Batch file (Sov IconeXP.bat) does not work on Windows 7 64 Bits as I just received it today, then the one below works just fine.

Sov IconeXP.bat - No longer works under Win7 64 Bits
=======================================
@echo off
Rem Save the key Pierre Torris in Softwar.reg
RegEdit /e "IcoSauve-JPierre-XP.reg" "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Pierre Torris\IcoSauve"

So this one works very well.
===========================
Save a Registry Key even on Windows 7 64 BITS:
===================================================
@echo off
reg export "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Pierre Torris\IcoSauve" c:\1\IcoSauve-Win7.reg
