.xls and .xlsx files

Hello,
I installed the Microsoft Office 2008 pack when I bought my iMac.
So far, there have been no problems with Windows files in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, but for the past 15 days, I have been unable to open .xls files.
Additionally, I have documents saved in .xls and others in .xlsx (the same for .doc and .docx).
Thank you for explaining.
Configuration: Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8) / Safari 5.1.7

    Hello,

    These are "Office" files and not "Windows" files.

    The format that ends with "x" is the format used by the latest versions of Office. It is backward compatible with the previous versions of the program - at least for reading, but normally your version fully supports these formats.

    What is strange is that you can no longer read the *.doc and *.xls (the "old" formats). Have you installed/uninstalled anything recently?

    ONLY the old .xls files are problematic. The .xlsx files are fine
    I just checked my documents, I can open ALL word folders .doc or .docx
    I haven't installed/uninstalled anything that could interfere with "office"

    To understand the problem well, they no longer open when you click on them, right?

    If you open them directly via the Excel menu, does it work or not?

    That's right, they no longer open when I click on them.
    It doesn't work either when I try to open them with Excel.

    Ok, so it's not a file association issue. Try repairing Excel: click on the "Office" button at the top left, then click on "Options." In the page that appears, choose "Diagnose and Repair" and follow the process...

    Strange that is.

    As for viruses, are you well protected?

    I am on an iMac. I do not see an "office" button
    In Excel preferences, I do not see an option to "repair"
    I do not have any special protection, I do a scan with Mac Keeper from time to time. I have just done a full scan of my folders, I only have 2 or 3 "old" .xls files, the one I cannot open is obviously the one I need and it is quite large (178 Ko)
    If worse comes to worst, I will recover the information on a PC because it can be opened under Windows.
