Hello,
I tried to install Backtrack 5 R3 on my hard drive, so I put my burned CD in, I boot from it, and I do everything necessary to get to the Backtrack desktop, but when I type "startx" and hit enter, I get nothing, just a black screen. I waited for a good half hour, but nothing happens, it stays on the black screen. During this black screen, the caps lock key keeps blinking continuously. I am on a HP G62 laptop, with a 500GB hard drive and 4GB of RAM, I have about 150GB free on my hard drive.
Thank you for your help.

Hello to both of you.
I see that the conversation is a bit old, but I wanted to tell you "by chance" that Backtrack 5 r3 works perfectly in dual boot with Windows 7. The GRUB (Multiboot boot loader) allows you to choose which operating system you want to boot into when starting your computer.
As for the black screen, if you burned your LiveCD carelessly (for example, if you didn't burn it at a low speed), there can be errors that prevent the desktop from loading correctly.

Hi everyone, I have the same problem with backtrack but I found a solution that works 100%
in the "grub" menu, press the TAB key and delete vga=720 then type "xforcevesa"
but you have to wait a little bit, but it works well after startx :D
and for dual boot, I would like to inform you that backtrack works normally with dual boot
and one more piece of information: when downloading Linux operating systems, do not pause the download, and do not burn at a very high speed. -
Hi, be careful because with Backtrack 5 you won't have dual boot, so if you have Windows installed and plan to have a dual boot, it's game over!

Well, I guess it's screwed then... :( Too bad, thanks anyway.

Hello, I have the same problem as Playboy, there's a black screen and the Caps Lock LED keeps flashing constantly. I don't think it's a matter of burning quality since I burned 2 DVDs at a low speed... I think it's the tattoo (tattooed PC) that's responsible... Please help me! Thank you.
