Repairing Windows XP from another system?

Hi,

is it possible to restore all the necessary files for the proper functioning of Windows XP from another system (in my case, Linux) by executing some actions to copy/paste data from the Windows XP installation disk to the right places...?
The repair method proposed by the CD when I boot from it does not work (it crashes).
Formatting is not an option.
Thank you.

where does your XP go when you normally start it?
have you tried F8 at startup?
can you start in safe mode?

Hi,
I see the beginning of the loading screen with the logo and the blue bar advancing, but only for a fraction of a second, then the computer restarts.
I tried all the modes offered with F8; none work better than the others.
So, safe mode doesn't work either.

Desktop or laptop?
Have you tried removing RAM and leaving only 1 stick?

It's a desktop PC, the RAM is working fine, no issues on that front, 0 errors from Memtest.
It's really a problem related to Windows.

It happened to me on a PC yesterday... I connected the hard drive externally and ran check disk (chkdsk)... once reassembled, it was perfect!

My HDD is SATA, I don't quite understand what you mean by "mounting externally."
Also, how do I run chkdsk?

Thank you lacharpente, your link to restore the hive from Ubuntu is interesting, I will check that right away.
But I'm afraid I don't have any restore points. :-/ I'll come back to confirm that (...).

Good evening,

so no restore points :-(

I tried the repair again with the installation CD but upon reboot, it crashes at the Windows loading screen with this error message:

And in safe mode it doesn't want to continue the installation upon reboot:

With your CD, if you choose R first, you must have the repair console, you can run a: chkdsk /f/r
The blue screen must be coming from your SATA hard drive, the XP CD does not have the SATA controller drivers:

I just reached the same conclusion more or less while reading threads on English-speaking forums...
Just out of curiosity, is there a "generic" SATA driver? I could check on another XP installation to see if I can copy the *.sys file associated with a SATA controller, but for that, I need to know its name.
In the meantime, I will try chkdsk /f/r, but I don't know if it stands a chance of solving the problem.

Another idea would be to switch the disk to IDE mode in the BIOS. I will try that too.
Thank you.

RE
You need the brand and the model number of your motherboard.
No, switching to IDE will not cause the PC to reboot; this must be set before an installation, so I assume it's not suitable for a repair.

At this point, it doesn't cost anything to switch to IDE; see what that does, and go back to SATA later if it doesn't work.

EDIT: I was already on IDE before... So the problem doesn't come from there since Windows loads a generic IDE driver during installation/repair. The disk is supposed to work, so
.

My motherboard: https://www.asus.com/ch-de/#download
I suppose it's the "AMD RAID Driver ...."? Or one of the things in the "chipset" category? I don't really know... I will already check if I can find a floppy disk drive (!).

Would you happen to have the CD for the motherboard?
