QWERTY to AZERTY keyboard in DOS

Solved/Closed

Hello,
I want to do a formatting, I read in the tips that I could do it by creating a boot disk under XP.
I did it, but when I type the command "format C: "my keyboard switches to "QWERTY". I managed to find "format C" but I'm missing the colon ":".
Does anyone know what I should do (I have 2 versions of XP on my computer and I would like to do a big cleanup).
Thanks
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0

    Euhhhhhh !
    That's called an XP bug!
    Well spotted!
    I found the solution.
The "DOS" window doesn't take into account local settings...since it doesn't read the good old autoexec.bat and config.sys!
You put it in direct mode and voilà, it works!!!
    Type this at the prompt
    KB16 fr
    and then type edit
    and oh miracle!!!
    you're in AZERTY!

And they haven't fixed the little bug under Vista either (just for your information!)

    try to do alt 58
hold down the left alt key and then type 58 on the numeric keypad/when you release alt it will give you the colon...
try it first with notepad.exe, you'll see!

      Hello philo2100
can you add that the problem is the same under System 7 as under Vista
      we can add the line
      kb16 fr
in the autoexec.nt file located in windows/system32 to make the correction permanent

I bought an ACER Extensa 4220 PC in Lebanon and I would like to change the keyboard from QWERTY to AZERTY and the language from Lebanese or English to French.

For the AZERTY keyboard, you press Alt+Shift and it will switch to AZERTY afterwards. For the language, it's in the control panel, but it's not necessary for only French to be installed.

    Hi!

The : are therefore the M key in uppercase! And there you go!

    Hello again,
I'm sorry for having asked the question before reading the posts about QWERTY; I was caught up in my formatting issues and it was only when I needed to give a relevant title to my message that I thought of it.
By reading the other posts on this topic, I was able to change the keyboard in DOS.
However, I have another problem: I typed the command "format C:" but it responds "Bad command or file name." Isn't this exactly what I should type to format everything?
    Thank you.

    Hello;
In that case, I recommend formatting your PC using the Windows XP installation CD!...

Usually, you go through the XP CD, and then it's going to ask you whether to format or not!
Otherwise, download this for a floppy disk:
    http://membres.lycos.fr/glsft/Download/BootDos622.zip
    format.exe is on it ;-)

the key : in qwerty corresponds to the M key (still needs to be tested if it's uppercase or lowercase)

    Hello,
when I open the command prompt, my keyboard is correctly switched to AZERTY, but when I enter the editor, my keyboard changes to QWERTY. How can I set the editor to AZERTY?

Do you mean that when you run/type cmd
    you're using qwerty?

Response to those who have a problem with AZERTY or QWERTY keyboards, especially under VISTA. VISTA allows switching between languages at will, whether from English to French or vice versa; however, an obstacle remains for pure DOS or applications running in DOS windows: This can involve QBASIC, the DOS editor "EDIT", or for those interested, the DEBUG program. I found a simple solution that involves installing a QWERTY keyboard with a USB connection. Not only does it work, but on a laptop, the additional keyboard coexists perfectly with the main keyboard. Plus, you "save" the main keyboard.
