Hello,

I'm repairing a friend's PC (DELL Dimension C521) but ... in vain ....

It was impossible to boot from the CD, so I wanted to go into the BIOS to set the bootable CD.

However .... I have a USB keyboard that is not recognized at startup .... So I can't access the BIOS..

I removed the battery (and pressed the power button for 30 seconds), did a clear CMOS as indicated on the Dell site (switched with the password jumper for 5 seconds) and now it's a disaster ... :D

Here are the messages:
- Diskette drive 0 seek failure (this shows that it has indeed reset, will just need to modify it in the BIOS)
- Keyboard failure (this annoys me because the keyboard is still not recognized ....)
- invalid configuration information please run setup program (so I need to go into the BIOS)

Well .... The issues are:
- Since the keyboard is not recognized, I can't press the famous F2 as they ask me to ...
- The BootableCD option is not enabled .... so I can't boot from the CD
- I don't have a PS/2 port ....

In short, I'm in trouble .... And I don't know what to do.

Thanks for your advice ...

P.S.: I called her to borrow her DELL keyboard, maybe that ... but I don't have much hope :p

Do you really have a lot on your plate? Generally, desktop computers always offer two types of keyboards (USB type and round). Either you're looking for a round type keyboard (it is recognized at startup). Or I simply suggest removing the hard drive from the machine, putting it into another one, doing all your installations, and then putting it back in its place.

Thank you for your response, but ...

I don't have a PS/2 port (the round connector as you said)

Moreover, it's a problem related to the BIOS (there's a perfectly working Windows on the HDD but ...) Basically, I need to access the BIOS by pressing "F2" but the keyboard isn't recognized since it's USB ... and for it to be recognized, I need to go into the BIOS. (a snake eating its tail).

    Official response:

It works with a DELL keyboard... These PCs are really garbage, totally not recommended if you want to tinker a bit, it's restricted from all sides grrrrrrrr
