MacBook Pro issue: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-898 reader

Hello,

I’m new to this forum and have been looking for a solution for my problem for a month and a half..
I’ve had a 13" MacBook Pro for about 2 years, its version: 10.6.8, Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

For about three months my MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-898 drive no longer recognizes any disks (CD or DVD) whether blank, burned, or official. Even my startup disk isn’t recognized.
My Disk Utility shows this:

Disk Identifier: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-898
Bus Technology: ATAPI
Connection Type: Internal
Burning: Provided by Apple
Writes CD: Yes
Writes DVD: Yes
The media is present: No

It’s precisely this last indication that worries me.

Do you have any ideas?

Thanks in advance, I hope to get an answer.

Configuration: Mac OS X / Safari 534.57.2

    Hello,

If this information is still there when a CD/DVD is in the drive, then there is a hardware problem: it no longer detects the presence of a CD/DVD, hence its inability to read it. A replacement of the CD/DVD drive may be considered. If you had the idea of taking an Apple Care extended warranty, call them and schedule a replacement.

    Thank you Ritchi,

I think the computer no longer even detects the drive; when I insert a CD it tries to read it for thirty seconds and then gives up and ejects it. That's why I can't even check if the information is still on there when the disk is inserted. It seems I took out an extension at Fnac, I'll go check tomorrow.

    Thank you.
