Hello,
Could someone help me set up the TP-LINK TL-WA730RE Range Extender?
I can't seem to do it and their support is in English...
I can't connect it directly, and it's impossible through the setup assistant because there is no option to scan...
Thank you in advance for your help.
Configuration: Windows Vista / Internet Explorer 9.0

Hello,
Thank you for your response, I will check tonight.
Quick question: by changing the IP address, am I at risk of losing my internet connection????
I believe the default IP address of the repeater is 192.168.1.264.....
Thanks for your help. -
Hello,
With my wa 730 re, I want to be an extender behind a Freebox V4, because my wi-fi signal is too weak where I want to use my old laptop!
The "set-up by button" procedure doesn't work, so I'm trying to use the installation disc with the "two" method.
1/ Should I be on any computer on the network?
2/ I am on a laptop that connects via wi-fi to the Freebox.
The procedure gets stuck on screen 8 of the manual after I entered the mac number of the box on screen 7! If I enter the mac number of the extender, it’s the same...
Who can help me?
Thanks. -
The configuration of this device can indeed pose some issues...
The first thing to do is to locate the IP address of the Freebox (usually 192.168.0.254 or 192.168.1.254) and its encryption mode (WEP, WPA...).
It’s best to perform the operations close to the Freebox so that the repeater can pick up the signal well.
Then, go through the setup wizard by following the indicated steps. You will need to change the proposed default IP address if it conflicts with that of the Freebox.
It should be on the same range as the Freebox, meaning either 192.168.1... or 192.168.0..., depending on what you previously identified (it’s best to set it to 192.168.0.1 if the Freebox is at 192.168.0.254, ensuring that this IP address remains fixed, and not dynamically assigned by the Freebox).
Be sure to enter the security key when prompted.
If all goes well, at some point the rightmost LED should light up steadily (next to the automatic configuration button, which should definitely not be used under penalty of "messing up" the configuration and having to start all over again).
From there, it’s best to "fine-tune" the configuration via the web interface.
To do this, open the internet and type the IP address of the repeater in the address bar (for example 192.168.0.1). A request for username and password should appear, which is admin/admin.
Go to "quick setup," check that "operation mode" is set to "range extender," that "region" is set to "france," that "Enable Wireless Radio" is checked, that "Wireless Security" matches the security mode of the Freebox, and that the security key is correct. A good piece of advice is to set "version" and "encryption" to "automatic" for both, to avoid any issues. Click "Next" and save. No need to reboot here.
Then go to "network," check that "type" is set to "static IP," that "IP address" is the one for the repeater (e.g., 192.168.0.1), that "Subnet Mask" is set to "255.255.255.0," and that "Gateway" is the IP address of the Freebox (e.g., 192.168.0.254). Save in case of changes; otherwise, it is unnecessary. Do not reboot yet.
Next, go to "Wireless," then "Wireless Security," and check that the security mode is the same as chosen before (WPA I suppose), and especially that "version" and "encryption" are set to "automatic." Save, and reboot the repeater as suggested.
Unplug the Ethernet cable from the repeater and place the repeater in the desired location. Not too far from the Freebox to have a chance of picking up the signal. Wait for the far-right LED to be steady, and test the connection...
In principle, it should work.
It's very important to follow all the steps carefully....
Good luck! -
...to clarify my last post, there is a chance that the first phase (via the setup assistant) will also be difficult if the Freebox is also on IP 192.168.1.254 (which is the default address of the relay), in this case it is advisable to first change the address of the Freebox (to 192.168.1.253 for example) by going into your account on Free.fr
Most other boxes are on different IP ranges.
If the assistant still refuses to complete the process, you can go directly through the web interface, at the cost of a few acrobatics:
Make sure of the IP address of the relay, which is either by default 192.168.1.254, or the one that you WOULD HAVE assigned to it if applicable (it's up to you to remember!).
Otherwise, you can always return to the default one by resetting the relay, by holding a pointed object in the hole at the back for 5-7 seconds.
Connect the relay to your PC with the network cable.
Then the issue is that the network card will not be on the same IP range as the relay, in the case of the default IP: go to the network settings of the LOCAL connection (and not WIRELESS!!!), and more specifically the TCP/IP settings. You will then need to set as IP address: 192.168.1.xxx (where xxx is between 1 and 253). The subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0, click OK...
Then, in the Internet address bar, type 192.168.1.254, you should then have access to the web interface of the relay (with admin/admin).
From there, resume what I detailed above regarding this part of the procedure... -
Hi,
with the address 192.168.1.254 for the repeater, I get an error message saying that the IP address is not valid, but I can't find how to change the repeater's IP. I'm using a bbox and when I try to change my bbox's IP, it's impossible even as an admin. Moreover, I have a lot of configurations on my network, and if I change my box's IP, I'll have to redo everything.
How can I change the repeater's IP please?? -
Hello,
I'm digging this discussion up a bit, but I thought it would be better than starting a new one.
As for me, this product works well, except that it needs to be reprogrammed every time the freebox reboots or after a power outage.
I have the impression that the freebox (V5) changes its "MAC Address of Root AP" at every startup.
Is this normal, do you have the same issue?
Thank you for your feedback. -
Hello,
All the information you need to connect and access the TP-LINK repeater's admin interface can be found in the manual on page 53:

Keep me posted. -
To change the repeater's IP, you need to connect it to your PC via cable.
It's best to disconnect your PC's Wi-Fi during the process (if it's connected to the BBox via Wi-Fi, or unplug it from the box if it's physically connected).
This way, you won't conflict with the box when you enter the repeater's address in the Internet Explorer address bar: 192.168.1.254
If the address still doesn't work, change your network card's IP (not the Wi-Fi card!) to 192.168.1.XXX, where XXX is not used by another device on your network, and set the gateway to the one automatically filled. Try entering the repeater's address: 192.168.1.254 in IE again, it should work.
Then configure your repeater via the web interface, as I described in my previous post.-
- On some versions of the TP-LINK TL-WA7301RE (the latest versions / year 2013 / the color is dark blue, nice design), the Wi-Fi repeater address is: 192.168.0.254
- So connect the repeater via the RJ45 cable to the PC, set a fixed IP address on the PC like:
-> fixed IP address: 192.168.0.10
-> Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
-> Validate = Ok
- Launch the internet browser to the address (of the Wi-Fi repeater): http:192.168.0.254
- Username: admin
- Password: admin
- Make your settings in the repeater’s administration (very simple!)
- Then unplug the RJ45 cable and set your PC back to obtain an address automatically via DHCP (as at the beginning)
- I find that this repeater works very well ... -
