Paper detection issue

Hello,
I have an HP Designjet 500 plotter that I've been using for about 6 years. For a few months now, it hasn't been detecting paper, whether from a roll or a sheet.
I used to be able to fix the error by removing the sensor located under the tray and cleaning it. I even tried shunting it for a while, which worked, but not for sheets (there's nothing telling the sensor that there are no more sheets).
I then replaced this Omron sensor. It worked for a few days, and since then, nothing.
Disassembling it is useless, and the shunt isn't effective either. I think the issue might be with the board, but I would like to know where to find one and at what price.
HP's maintenance fees are quite excessive!!! I'd like to avoid contacting them.
Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 10.0.1

And at the supplier where you bought it, is there any way to find a card or maybe play with the warranty?

Well, my supplier has closed and the replacement company that did the maintenance once said that HP no longer makes spare parts for this model (which is only 8 years old...). And then, as for the warranty, it expired a long time ago. But the more I think about it, the harder it is for me to believe that it's the motherboard after all. I'm going to try changing the sensor, in case there's a voltage issue causing it to fail.
