Difference between AVI and MKV formats?

Hello, can someone explain to me the difference between an AVI file and an MKV file? Because I’m not an expert in computers and I'm a bit lost with all these formats... Thank you very much

Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 8.0.1

But I just downloaded a HD video file. Is it normal that it is in MKV while the standard definition files are in AVI? Is there a reason??

it doesn't mean anything, I have SD mkv files!
it depends on the "wants" of the file creator

Ok. But if I convert my file to AVI for greater flexibility, I won't lose quality (HD...) will I?

Why would you want to convert?

I don't know why I haven't had any HD MKV files
(I always convert them to AVI for compatibility with the living room player)
