Speakers, sound cuts out and resumes.

Hello,
I’ve had Hercules XPS 2.1 40 slim speakers for a little over a year now. And I have a problem that’s getting worse. When I plug my speakers into my laptop, iPod, or other device, the sound may not work, like a bad connection. When I twist the 3.5 mm jack of my speakers (which goes into my laptop), the sound comes back, but then cuts out again, depending on how I turn it, etc...
I don’t understand... I tried the cotton swab dusting trick, but the problem is still there.
Who can help me? :)
Configuration: Windows XP / Firefox 8.0
