USB drive I/O device error Solved

Hello

I have a big problem, it’s catastrophic. I have an mp3 player with an SD card. It has a 1 GB card in it, and therefore a good amount of data. Everything was working perfectly until at work they did an update of I don’t know what, and I forgot to unplug my player. Since then, there’s this error message when I click on it both at work and at home:

G:\ is not accessible
Cannot perform the requested operation due to an I/O device error

Yet my USB stick is recognized...

I absolutely need to recover the data. What should I do to make my mp3 player/SD card readable again, if possible :(((

Go to Device Manager and disable the extended host controller, and normally everything should fall into place. Because I had the same issue. I hope this helps you.

If you put the memory back into your reader, can it read the data? If yes, all is not lost; if no, you're in trouble.

In the first case, the reader recognizes the data. So there may have been an update on the office PC, but that shouldn’t affect your USB/SD card or the configuration of your home PC.

Insert your SD card into your PC, delete the applications that manage it, and reinstall them.

Programs, patches, etc., are not used to writing on memory devices, USB peripherals, or others.

Hello,

My solution was to read the card with an operating system other than Windows. I used a PDA and therefore Windows Mobile. It did not "recognize the error" and thus read the card normally, allowing me to recover all my data. The alternative solution was to use a Mac to read on Mac OS.

Good evening,
Also a victim of the I/O error message on my MP4 player with SD card, I found a solution hoping it helps some of you :)

Method 1: After the error, go to the icon in the bottom right "safely remove hardware" and then connect your USB stick/player to another USB port, for instance, if you plugged it in the front of the PC, try the back, ideally to a place where you have never connected it before.
==> At this stage, it worked for me, to reuse it in the front, I continued with Method 2.

Method 2: Connect the player to the PC, after the I/O error (on XP), open Device Manager, click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, then System. In the System Properties window, click on the Hardware tab, then Device Manager.
In the Device Manager window, in the View menu, click on Devices by connection, identify your player, navigate up to the root node "USB Root Hub", click on the uninstall icon (or double-click) then unplug your USB and restart.

Understanding:
I think that using the usual USB connection (8 months without issues) with another device (Webcam) blocked this USB port for me.
One solution could be to reinstall the webcam and remove it properly... for those who like experiments, but I can't do that anymore :(

To resolve this issue, change the transfer mode of your CD-ROM drive in the IDE channel properties. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click on Start, right-click on My Computer, and then click on Manage.
2. Under Computer Management (local), click on Device Manager.
3. In the right pane, expand ATA/ATAPI IDE Controllers.
4. Right-click on the channel to which your CD-ROM drive is connected, and then click on Properties. Generally, this channel is the Secondary IDE Channel.
5. Under the Advanced Settings tab, in the Transfer Mode area for your CD-ROM drive, click on PIO Only.

Hi everyone, just in case some of you are still having an issue with this, I had my HDD that was giving me this problem. I restarted my PC and removed the CD that was running in the CD drive (maybe that was causing a conflict) and it's working again ^^.

Hello,  My USB drive LaCie MosKeyto 8 GB (( LaCie MosKeyto USB flash drive - 8 GB - Fnac.com - USB key: http://www.fnac.com/LaCie-MosKeyto-lecteur-flash-USB-8-Go/a3216234/w-4 )) is displaying this I/O error message, at least I cannot format, partition, or wipe it. A Romanian translation file (lang-1067.dll, lang folder) for portable CCleaner needed to be fixed by chkdsk (error message from Windows 7 x64 home), it was repaired, but after running chkdsk again and testing, I noticed that the physical error search got stuck; it was after the restart to repair (*successful*) that the USB drive became unreadable. I can assign it a letter, the hardware is recognized, but I cannot format the usable part of the drive in the disk management.  I noticed that the device safely remove icon was flashing; given that only the USB drive triggers the icon (when the CD drive is disabled, power-saving mode). I believe the drive was already poorly accessible.  I tried TestDisk, PhotoRec, MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition 7.6, EASEUS Partition Master 9.1.1 Home Edition, EditHexa; but I cannot write to the recognized drive, bad disk is displayed by "MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition 7.6" (on the *unallocated* area, which is supposed to be allocated).  Even diskpart with attributes volume clear readonly tells me that the command was executed but then I can't format or partition it.  I shouldn't have restarted to do a chkdsk and I should have backed up the drive while it was readable (yes, or oh no, because it's following the restart with the drive seen as "C" by chkdsk, yet successful (repair completed), that the drive is dead)...; well I think it was just duplicates.  Then, since problems come in batches, I saved (because I hadn't done it (kamikaze ...) and since everything was on the drive (almost all) or double on the PC; my last invoices notably), I backed up my PC on an external drive with Norton Ghost launched from the F5 menu of Windows 7 and my PC shut down four times due to heat. The fan does not run at full speed and no control is provided except in normal Windows (I lower the processor and there is an eco mode). You need to manage the PC temperature guys (not just for Ghost) when you create software, thank you. (Knowing that the Windows 7 memory test, F5 menu on boot, makes the Toshiba Satellite A660-1F6 PSAW3E (bios phoenix 2.30 up to date) overheat, but it turns off beforehand, if I disable the processor cache (complete test).)  If I start the PC with USB legacy enabled in the BIOS and the unformatted drive as indicated by Windows, the PC does not start and hangs on the drive (but I can insert the drive later, when the Windows 7 F5 or F8 menu is displayed; that’s what I did for the (fatal) chkdsk restart). Ah, yes, Windows formatting tool does not see the size of the drive, unable to format (I can start the formatting but it runs endlessly and an error message appears) and the disk management fails to create a partition (it's the only option available in the right-click menu on the unallocated space; not like usual with this drive).  (note: yes, yes, we can partition, but only one partition is readable if we created several. normally, there shouldn't be a partition table, nor MBR, nor apparently NTFS partitions = bootable drive (formatted with the official tool) Windows 7 (PC with a phoenix bios from m*/de therefore); personally, otherwise it locks my PC on boot if USB legacy is enabled, but no USB boot if USB legacy is disabled.)  I have an identical spare drive...; maybe I shouldn't/shouldn't have left it plugged in permanently.  And for the reimbursement of the drive, yes, if I find the invoice and if...

I couldn't format it either; it kept giving me the same response as you: E/S, etc. I formatted it to exFAT and then reformatted it to NTFS, and it works again... there you go!

Thank you, on Windows 7 uninstalling and reinstalling didn't work, but I disabled the hubs and then re-enabled them while keeping the hard drive plugged in, and it's good now.
