MFT corrompu

Hello,

I have an external drive of 40 GB, with 2 NTFS partitions, each 20 GB. I damaged one of the partitions called "Personnel".
While performing a "check disk" on this partition, under XP, the hard drive was accidentally unplugged in the middle of the process after about 5 hours. I think I had about 1 to 2 hours left to complete the check.
I have unsuccessfully tried to recover this partition with testdisk 6.4 / 6.5 and Partition magic 8.0.
When launching chkdsk in DOS, I get the following messages:
Corrupted master file table. CHKDSK aborted.
or
'can't open direct access'.

The label "personnel" of the partition is recognized under testdisk but not under XP.
The capacity shows 0 Kb under XP, while it should be 20 GB.

As my partition is still inaccessible and I have important data on it, could you please help me recover it?
Thank you in advance for your assistance

Hello,

If the MFT is corrupted and it is impossible to fix it with testdisk, then the only option left is to use recovery software.
For me, for a 320 GB HDD in NTFS, the software GetDataBack for NTFS was my savior, took about 5 hours, but compared to other free software, it immediately indicated the number of files detected, which is rather reassuring :-)
Recovered about 95% of the information.

Hello,

I also have an MFT problem.

The MFT of my laptop's hard drive is damaged (Unable to boot).

I was able to recover my data using Knoppix (transfer to another PC over the network) and would like to reinstall Windows on my laptop (even if it means formatting the HDD).

It is impossible to reinstall a previously made ghost (error during MFT restoration), impossible to reinstall Windows on one of the partitions, and impossible to format a partition with Partition Magic on a bootable CD (writing error).

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can recover my hard drive because right now the laptop is useless to me, and I would like to avoid buying a new hard drive?

Hi Samfin
If you can no longer format by booting your computer from a boot CD, it seems that your hard drive is done for. You can try to salvage it using the repair console if you have a Windows disk: https://www.informatruc.com
Good luck!
Ciao!

Hello,

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m afraid of. Fortunately, I was still able to back up all my data.

I just went to the manufacturer's site for the drive (Hitachi) and I found a bootable CD with utilities to test, repair sectors, and wipe all the sectors. I’ll download and test that tomorrow because I really believe it’s my last chance.

Thank you for your reply and support :-) .
