Gmini XS100 Archos Problem

Solved

Hello everyone.

Recently, I bought an Archos GminiXS100 media player. During its first use, it worked properly; it was recognized by the computer, but when I tried to add songs to it, the computer recognized it as a small icon where the time is displayed with << safely remove hardware >>, and in My Computer as a removable disk, but when I click on it, it is empty, even though during my first use I had already transferred mp3 files to it.
When I try to add songs, it shows "The specified file could not be found, verify that the path and filename are correct."
I also noticed that the launch window that appeared when I first connected my mp3 no longer shows up.

I checked in the control panel, and then under Multimedia Devices, the Removable Disk shows up, but with 0 bytes.

Thank you for helping a flight attendant in distress with her computer and mp3 =)
Configuration: Windows XP Home

Hello everyone
So, I've had the same problem with my Archos Gmini XS100 of 3GB. The first time I didn't think too much about it, I sent it to customer service and they returned it to me in working order. After some inquiries, they did an OS update (the software that makes the Archos work like Windows on a PC) and that's it??!! Personally, I have some doubts, I think they reformatted it right away because I lost all my data when I got it back.
A few weeks ago, the same problem arose, the Gmini is no longer recognized as ... but as a mobile device indicating 0 bytes. No longer covered by the warranty, and since it didn't seem like a complicated operation, I decided to dive in. Well, it worked for me, I don't know if it's a universal method, but here it is:
- It's quite simple, just go (in the Gmini menus of course since you can't do anything from Windows) to "Settings," then "System," then go to "USB Port" and there, normally it’s set to "mobile device" and you need to change it to "hard disk" and vice versa if it’s set to "hard disk" as was my case. This operation requires reformatting the Gmini, which is annoying because you lose all the data on it, but you don't really have a choice. I read that for some it deleted everything, even the OS; that didn't happen to me, and anyway, by searching the forum JBMM.fr (a forum specifically dedicated to users of Archos products), you can find that kind of data without problems. Once the reformatting is done, it should be recognized by Windows. Personally, I switched it back to "hard disk" mode (with the same steps) because I prefer it that way, but after all, it's up to you...
Just a heads up: after these shenanigans, it tended to bug out, it froze at the end of some songs and I had to restart it. Since then, I've run a check for errors (in Windows, right-click on the Archos, "properties," then "tools"). Then an update of the software that I found on the Archos website (http://www.archos.com/support/download/firmware.html?country=fr&lang=fr and I followed the instructions given there. No more problems since.
That's my experience, I hope some can find hidden information among the spelling mistakes.
I'll just end by saying that despite these issues, I think the Gmini XS100 is a good product, it doesn't do much (no calendar, games, photos or videos), but what it does (play music) it does well.
I don't hang out on this forum often, but if you have questions, feel free to ask.

Before connecting the Archos, you need to go into its setup and set it to mobile device instead of hard drive! There you go :)

Here, I had the same problem as many of you: my player was saying that reading the hard drive was impossible, and it was making a really abnormal noise.
And while reading this forum, I managed to find the solution, or at least I hope so.
It's very simple.
First of all, let your machine load what it has to load, hence the horrible and alarming loading noises, and once "hard drive reading impossible" appears on the screen, press the button that is normally used to turn on the ARCHOS, a "formatting" menu will appear. From there, you format it, and normally after that, your computer will recognize the device.
Then, you go on the internet, to the address that was given earlier, in another post, to upgrade to a "firmware" newer than yours. Once downloaded, you will put it in "data", on the hard drive of your mp3, as if it were a song. Finally, you turn on your ARCHOS to go to "settings", then "system" and "software update" (to replace your old OS version).
There you go, it worked for me, but I don't really know if this is the real universal solution. Well, good luck to those who have problems with this capricious machine.

Hello Flight Attendant,
that's great, I just bought that device too (without the same issues as you, lol)
Could it be that you accidentally formatted your MP3 ?????
That's the first idea that comes to my mind!

Thank you for replying =)
Unfortunately, I mistakenly formatted my mp3, but I think if nothing changes in a while, I'll have to do it! (hoping it works!)
Are you happy with your device?

See you soon!

For the few times I've used it since I don't use it much during vacation, yes, I'm very happy with it! The only downside is the charging method! But hey, you can't ask for too much!

For your issue, I wanted to ask if you have tried it with another computer? That way you'll know if it's a problem with the device on your computer or with your MP3!

Keep me posted ;)

Hello,

I have exactly the same issue, it seems that in my case it is neither a computer problem nor a cable (tested on another machine with another cable and everything...)

My drive is recognized but I can't access the directories (it appears as an empty HDD under Windows)

Do you have any idea?

Thanks in advance

Hello everyone,
for your information, I made the mistake of buying this player a year ago, and therefore at a very high price, trusting the prestige brand.
Today, the player has arrived at my place for the fifth time due to a necessary warranty return approximately every month. Indeed, the hard drive often freezes, and sometimes, to our great dismay, it can’t read anything anymore!! Then the player can’t turn on, overheats, asks for a formatting which, of course, it cannot perform. For my part, this player which cost five hard drives from Archos should be criticized more than praised. And now, what I hope is to be able to sell this bad deal to the first unsuspecting buyer.
I look forward to your responses..

I also have this problem with my gmini xs100, the computer doesn't recognize it and it says "removable disk D" with nothing on it... I’ve looked at a lot of forums and everyone says to go into the settings and set it to mobile device... But I don’t have that damn option!!! I can just read or not read all the files, update the software (none found), or format it (I’ve already tried that and got nothing!)...
Moreover, a lot of people have problems like this... Archos is losing my respect!!!
Help us!

I have no solution for anyone except for a pigeon shooting contest with all our Gmini Archos 100. It’s the same, the same, the same, it crashes, it needs to be completely reformatted, right now I'm facing it and it turns on and off in an explosion of pixels worthy of the Matrix, it's very pretty but I would prefer to listen to music with it.
By the way, for those interested, it’s for sale, I'll let it go for a bundle of leeks.

Long live Archos and the crappy machines! I have the same problem as all the XS100 owners, the hard drive is failing and it asks for a reformat... obviously, it can’t do it, so I’m selling it too... but beware, to the highest bidder! Minimum price: a sharpened (or unsharpened) pencil...

Hello,
I've had the Archos 104 XS for a while now. Unfortunately, I'm encountering the same issue as many of you. The player freezes, displays a playback error message, and asks for formatting. At that point, it overheats, crashes, and can't even be formatted.
The computer doesn't recognize it either.. it shows "unknown device"
Has anyone managed to solve this problem????
Is there any way to force formatting????

HELP!!!!

Hello everyone

After having the same problem with the XS 100, I bought the 104 just a week ago

and now I have the same problem as with the old one that I had to return to Archos...

The disk is stuck

Unfortunately, the bad news for all of us is that not only does formatting not help, but it also makes the Archos unusable (I learned this after doing it)

because it ABSOLUTELY deletes all the files from the Archos, including the ones that made it work

So I don't even know how to tell my parents that my Archos is done for; I don't even know if it can be repaired, and I will probably have to send it back to the customer service, which will return it to Archos, which won't send it back to me or will take 3 months...

All this at a time when I really need it for the holidays!!!

So if anyone has a solution for us, please come forward!!!

Good luck to everyone!

Audrey

Is there anyone who knows where we can find the option to switch the Archos XS 100 to removable disk mode?

Yes in Settings >> System >> USB Port
You have either mobile device or hard drive.

Just to know: I have the same problems with my Archos. How do we format it? I've read that you could lose all your data and that it could even become unusable... So how do we properly format it?
Thank you

Hello,
You seem very knowledgeable about Archos and I followed your "offer" to download updates for this lovely device. Thank you!
You also mentioned not to hesitate to reach out to you since you are not always on the site. So I'm asking you, if you have the time, to answer my questions posted on the forum on Friday the 19th as they are not generating much interest!
Thank you in advance

Hello!

... well actually... I'm adding myself to the list of "complainers"...
since my Gmini XS100 is no longer recognized by my PC (nor by other PCs) except as an empty "removable disk." and I can't put anything on it anymore...
I sent an email to Archos' technical service, they told me I would get a response within two days... and now it's been almost a week with no news... :-/

I've read some advice from others: going to "settings" (okay), "system" (okay)... but in this menu I only have 2 options: either the update or the formatting... but nothing about USB...

does anyone have any other ideas?...

So my Archos was in the same situation as yours. I went to the store where I bought it, I explained to the department manager (who was very knowledgeable) about my issue, he took my MP3 player, connected it to a demonstration computer equipped with Windows Vista and... like magic, Vista detected a problem with the hard drive and offered to fix the issue. Since then, my MP3 player has been working again, so if I encounter a problem like that in the future, I now know how to address it. I hope this email has been helpful to you.

Hello,
I have exactly the same problem as S.
My MP3 player is only recognized as a removable disk and it’s empty (and this happens on all PCs).
If the problem does indeed come from the hard drive, would you know how much the repair costs?

Thank you.

Hello, I have had an Archos player for four days, and just now, after a small shock, the player displays the following error message: "Read error, unable to read from disk." What can I do before sending it back for repair? Can I send it back to any repair service, or only to the one where the device was purchased?

Hello!! I have another problem with my player.
Right now, it turns on correctly, then I plugged it into the computer to add songs. After doing that, my player gets stuck every time it starts up, even though its battery is full. Do you have any idea to help me, thanks in advance.

Hello,
Yesterday my Archos Gmini XS100 worked perfectly
this morning it refused to turn on, in fact when I plug it into my PC, it charges (so everything is fine there), then I turn it on, it asks if I want to enable USB (still normal)
and then... it bugs, it makes a terrible noise and stays on "USB connected"
of course, the PC doesn’t recognize it

can you please help me?

Before it used to freeze, once off the screen stayed on my last listened tracks (no way to turn it back on or off), the hard drive (flash memory rather, right?) was making a lot of noise...

I downloaded the Update (not the latest, but the one before that), it has been running very well for 2 hours, for once it hasn't lagged.

It seems to me that it's on its way to work again, and I hope so!
