I'm going to look like an idiot, but what does "sending a poke" (on Facebook) mean?

Poke is used to manifest oneself, to attract attention without saying more.

"Poke" means to touch (like a friendly pat on the back, for example), a kind of greeting or digital "hello."

In summary, there are several possible interpretations.

Poking a member (friend or not) is like tapping them on the shoulder or poking them with a finger to say "hey, I'm here." That's the official meaning and, at least, the most politically correct one.
It could also be translated as:

stuffing
filling
having sex with
It's certain that the action seems a bit more engaged than a gentle tap on the shoulder. Far from us the idea of reducing poking to mere sexual antics, but one can still wonder what was going through the minds of Facebook's designers in 2004.

Because each member can have their own translation of the word poke, it’s advisable to use it with caution. Especially if you want to attract the attention of your boss or your mother-in-law. You've been warned!
