Confronted with the same problem as lilou54 and others with Win7 Premium 64-bit, Jojo29's solution did not work for me. Crazibabe's solution didn't work either.
Restoring the libraries to default was not enough.
But, I managed to resolve the issue.
In "Change settings", "configure backup", I selected "manual configuration" and then unchecked the libraries, and the backup finally works.
I saw on another forum that if the libraries are not backed up, the files that make them up are still backed up, which is essential. I would like a confirmation.

      Hello, claudiusb78,
You are amazing because I had asked this question in 2011, but no solution worked. So, I gave up. And here I am, thanks to you, for the first time, I managed to make a backup! So I thank you very much for solving my problem. Best regards, Lilou54

Please cancel my previous comment. I found it!

      Hello
For weeks now, I've been experiencing a failure of the backups I regularly make.
I tried to fix the problem by reverting to the default libraries, as advised by a reader on ccm (Jojo29), but unfortunately without success.
Then I excluded my personal library from the backup, as suggested by a ccm reader, and the backup worked.
But I wonder what would happen in the event of a restore with this reduced backup? What would be the consequences of this exclusion?! Vital question!
      Thank you

    Hello,

Click on Start, then click on Computer.
Right-click on Libraries and click on Restore default libraries.
Note: this will remove all custom libraries.

Hello Jojo29, Thank you very much first of all for your quick response, it's very kind of you. I have therefore performed the maneuver to restore the default libraries for the 2 users, but it did not work. I don't know where the problem comes from. What is the VSS service? In any case, thanks again. See you soon.

    Hello Lilou54!

I've read multiple times that when you have a problem with the VSS service, the best thing to do is to check your System Event Log!

You can access it this way: a tool borrowed from Foxburry in one of its answers regarding the issue discussed in this thread:

    https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-14372562-service-vss#5

    Here’s their help:

Look in your system event log.
    This is for:

    Start\Run\
    Type compmgmt.msc and OK!!!

    Expand Event Viewer\Windows Logs\System\
Identify the latest Error messages marked with a red dot. Right-click on them. Then on Event Properties. This way, you can find out the origin of the failure.

Personally, I was curious about which service might correspond exactly to the VSS service; I found the service and set it to Automatic and started it Delayed! Randomly, following my logic ;) !

Please correct me immediately if my intuitions are wrong... thank you in advance:

    Here’s the service activated:

    * Volume Shadow Copy (VSS): Automatic and Start

    * Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider (swprv): Automatic and Start

Services that seemed logically linked to the proper functioning of Windows backups!!!

I don’t know if I'll be able to help you, but I’d like to: I found various messages here and there mentioning issues with the VSS service:

This message contains the detailed manipulation mentioned above, but there, you will have, as an example, the expression of someone with the same issue as you: a maneuver to determine your error's cause and fix the latest if possible:

    https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-14372562-service-vss

Here, you have an article to repair Seven with the console on DVD or not:

    http://www.vista-xp.fr/forum/topic4807.html

Aside from all that, I understood that the only difference between us is the creation of multiple accounts on your computer (I think): because for my part, I managed to resolve this issue simply by restoring all the default libraries, since I only have one account on my computer, which I feel might have made it easier for me! Well, it's just a simple assumption.

I wish I could have provided you some help; let’s see!

    Good luck to you Lilou54.

A big thank you to crazycrabe for his precise and clear memo that allowed me to repair the VSS service, which among other things made it impossible to create restore points, in short, everything related to system protection.

I don't know who he is, but you can follow him; he is clearly very good.
      Thank you to him.

      PNC.

Thank you very much PNC for your compliments that touch my heart ;)!

But I must admit that being someone with almost self-taught abilities, there are areas where I do very well and others, including in computing, where I know absolutely nothing ;) !

And regarding myself, I’m just a little woman in her thirties trying to live well, a bit like everyone else, I imagine;)...

      Best to you.

    Hello everyone,

I encountered the same problem, and after searching for a long time, I finally found the issue.

For those who, like me, have installed a PC cleaning program like AVG PC TuneUp, it is essential to disable the TURBO mode, as it is this function that blocks the backup.

Sorry I'm very late, but thanks to crazybabe =D I set vss and swprv to delayed startup and now it's working (well usually by this backup stage, it has already crashed, so I conclude that it worked...).

But this kind of issue must be due to aggressive disk cleaners that go looking for things where they shouldn't. Be careful.

After interrupting my manual backup, I was unable to modify the backup settings to choose the folders to back up.

Thank you very much, I followed the advice to disconnect and then reconnect the USB backup drive, and the option was offered to me again.

    Bravo !
I confirm ... I have activated the TURBO mode in ''[AVG PC - TuneUp 2016''.
Conclusion, failure in the attempt to back up using the built-in Windows tool (Backup / Restore from drive c:\).
This observation holds true whether operating in Win 7 or in Win 10!
Simply reactivate the STANDARD mode in ''AVG PC TuneUp'' (which cancels the ''TURBO'' state) and the backup will successfully complete.
Thank you for this oh! how precious . . . .

My Windows 7 backup wasn't working. My "photos" library folder was displayed with a lock. I right-clicked, went to properties, restored default settings, and I was able to make my backup.

      Hello, crazybabe,
I'm glad the trick worked for you, but it didn't do anything for me; the backup still doesn't work!
Problem unresolved on my end, then!

    Awesome!!!

I finally managed to back up my computer; the backup failed due to Windows Error Code = 0x81000031; by following exactly the steps indicated by Jojo29.!

Just a clarification, since I didn’t know what name Computer referred to in the Start menu until now, for everyone who, like me, was still in this ignorance, the term Computer simply refers to My Computer ;)!!!

Thank you very much Jojo29 for taking the time to answer this question.

    Problem solved on my end!!!

      Hello,

I have roughly the same problem as you all (and I envy you for having resolved it!) except that I am also stuck at the previous step, which is creating a system image... a step required to back up my computer (for which I also receive the same message as you (0x81000031) :(

When I try to create a system image, I get the following message:

"VSS service operation failure. Please consult the VSS and SPP application event logs for more information. (0x807800A1)

      Additional information:
A component of the VSS service encountered an unexpected error. Please check the application event log for more information. (0x80042302)"

When I checked the log (thanks to your advice, it helped me find the log faster), here are the details:

"Volume Shadow Copy service information: Unable to start COM server with CLSID {65ee1dba-8ff4-4a58-ac1c-3470ee2f376a} and name SW_PROV. [0x80070422, The service cannot be started because it is disabled or there is no enabled device associated with it."

      Any advice? Any ideas?

Indeed, switching from turbo mode to normal has resolved my backup issue... and it's normal since turbo mode disables a lot of unnecessary stuff... Apparently, not so unnecessary after all!! ^^

    Hello,

The solution is quite simple: in the Start Menu, in the search box, type "services" (without the quotes). A window opens that displays the list of services. Locate "Windows Backup" and it may be that the service is stopped. Double click on the "Windows Backup" line and a window will appear. The service is named SDRSVC; you can now reactivate the service and choose different settings. Click "apply," then OK. Return to the control panel to "backup and restore" and you will be able to reconfigure the Windows backup settings.
