Connecting an External Hard Drive on Ubuntu..?

Hello,

I would like to connect a new external hard drive (USB connection) to a PC running Ubuntu 10.10, but when I plug it into a USB port, the diode on the external drive blinks; it seems that the drive is powered and reacts, but Ubuntu doesn't recognize it. I would know how to proceed under Windows, but I have no idea under Ubuntu and all the information I find online doesn't help me as it is aimed at insiders. I am capable of understanding, as long as it's explained step by step, starting from scratch, with beginner-friendly terms (...or almost!) on the Ubuntu OS.
I know this topic has already been addressed online... but not in a clear enough way. If you think you have the necessary patience to take on this challenge, I thank you in advance very cordially!

    Hello,

    Several questions...

    1) Do you use the cord (possibly) provided with the disk (especially if it's a "Y" cable)?

    2) When connecting your disk, does it appear in "shortcuts"?

    3) When connecting your disk, could you run this command in a terminal (copy/paste):
    sudo fdisk -l
    - press "enter"
    - enter your password (nothing appears in the terminal, that's normal ;-)
    - press "enter"
