hello, I have a problem with the "internet connection" icon (two small computers, like network connections) that disappeared from the taskbar since the update of my Sagem Livebox from Wanadoo! My Livebox is connected as a router, via Ethernet with an RJ45 cable, I did not install the Wanadoo software; before the update, I had an icon that appeared in the taskbar where I could see the speed of my internet connection; but now since the Livebox update, this icon has disappeared, as well as the internet connection in "properties" of network connections! In fact, the computer does not see the router! If someone could help me, I would appreciate it in advance...(I specify that my network is still working well, as well as my internet connection = I can connect but cannot "monitor" my internet connection)

Hi,  Yu needs to go to the control panel, then internet and network connections, and on the icon of your connection, you right-click and select properties, and that's where it is.

hi,  take a look at your network card! workstation --> properties --> hardware --> device manager  do you have an exclamation mark??  good luck

Thank you for this attempt to help. I've already done everything you recommend (which pertains to basic network settings). The problem seems deeper since that infamous icon indicating the internet connection appears when the computer starts up and then disappears after a while (not just the taskbar icon, but the connection itself in the network connections) without me being able to determine the cause. The strangest thing is that when this happens, I still have internet access, but I no longer have access to the other computers on the network. It’s enough to disable/enable the network card for it to return, but obviously, that's not very practical for remote access.

For your information, all machines have fixed IP addresses and are connected via Wi-Fi.

I actually think the problem comes from the Wi-Fi router (Club Internet box).

Otherwise, I have reinstalled the TCP/IP layers, which did not solve the problem.

In short, I haven't reinstalled this machine in a while; despite the registry cleanups, I think it needs a complete reinstall, the day I find the time.

Right-click on the notification area, properties, taskbar tab, there is a box to hide inactive icons.
But if we also click on customize, we can see all the possible icons and adjust for each to hide if inactive. Give it a try, I haven't been a victim yet o)

ps: I forgot, there is no button for the last setting, I clicked on the text in black hide if... or always hidden or always shown.

pffff, I don't want to be unpleasant but it's not an icon problem I'm having. It's the INTERNET CONNECTION that disappears from my network connections, causing inaccessibility to my local network but - and here's the strange part - it doesn't cause an internet cut-off.
So it has nothing to do with the hide inactive icons function.... thank you anyway, and please also read the problem history carefully before writing.

At first glance, it seems like a display issue (only the icons disappear or blur, or is it the entire desktop?)... perhaps updating the graphics card drivers could be a good first step...

I have the same problem, it's the sudden disappearance of icons and the taskbar, and it's only by pressing ctrl, alt, and the print screen key and then restarting the PC that they come back.
Please help me, I even thought about returning it because it's still under warranty.
It's driving me crazy.

Well, we're no longer talking about the original topic "disappearance of internet connection icon" here.
The problem you're encountering, Nad, is Windows Explorer crashing for some reason. It would be good to know which version of Windows you have.
You don't need to restart every time. When you do Ctrl-Alt-Delete, first check the processes tab and see if explorer.exe is still active despite crashing. If it is, terminate it.
Then go to the applications tab and click on new task, there you type "explorer.exe". Your desktop (icons and taskbar) should reappear.
To address the problem in a way that resolves it, a basic approach:
I advise you to do the Windows updates online (Windows Update).
Next, download Ad-Aware SE and Spybot, which are two anti-malware programs. For each of these programs, update them online and then run them to properly clean your machine.
After that, download RegCleaner, this utility will clean your registry.
Restart after this cleaning and things should be better.

I was wondering during your TCP/IP reinstallation if you manually deleted the winsocks from the registry, you never know, sometimes it debugs a bit and initializes your internet connection well during the TCP/IP installation.
Otherwise, you can thank Bill and Microsoft for this magnificent faulty Windows system that we know well!
I have the impression that our Linux community is going to gain another member O_o! yes yes......
By the way, what antivirus do you have? If you have Norton (well hello bugs with him), it's normal, it's a real security nightmare and it could be responsible for your problem; if not.. then it wouldn't come from them (experience speaks, believe me)
Also, the initial release of Windows SP2 caused this kind of bugs, try going back to SP1 (just to see).
By the way, how is your network connection with the other computers set up? (Hub, ethernet card,....wifi??)
If wifi....mouuuuuuuahahahahahHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA arghglblglb....no surprise!!! I have three on wifi and it's not great.
Oh yeah, by the way, in msconfig, disable Internet Explorer at startup and see if you still have the problem?

I forgot.....
if you went to "administrative tools" and "services," check the startup type of the network connection services; often the 'automatic' type of one of these services can explain the disappearance and appearance of connection icons due to connection failure and attempts.
Try starting them one after the other to see the effect; I lean towards the one titled "Computer Explorer" concerning your case..

I've had the same problem twice since yesterday (October 14, 2007). I had to update my system (like a clean installation, but keeping everything else).

I also noticed that if I started a search either through Windows Explorer or by right-clicking on "Start" and selecting "Search", the search pane would not appear. However, in Explorer, it was fine when pressing CTL-F.

Why twice, you may ask?

Because after reinstalling the first time, everything returned to normal. I launched the automatic updates from the Microsoft site. When I rebooted, the icons for my connections had disappeared along with the "icon tray" from my taskbar, and the search problem occurred again. I ran a virus scan, and nothing was detected (yes, I know that’s not 100% proof).

I think there's a fix in what Microsoft offers that is messing things up (to be polite). I made an important decision:

No updates. And it works like a charm.

Otherwise, there's another solution to make the internet connection icon reappear: for those who have a network bridge that serves no purpose, it needs to be removed, and the internet connection icon will reappear!! For others who are using Wi-Fi with an Inventel device, good luck, it's a problematic piece of hardware...

I also have this problem and I've done everything mentioned above. But nothing works anymore, I'm on XP and I no longer have my icon in the taskbar at the bottom, my desktop shortcut is okay and if I go to (Network Connections) my connection is connected... So it's impossible to right-click and disconnect!!!
To close my connection, I absolutely have to turn off my modem! I know it's not the end of the world, but it's annoying. I called my provider for more information, and they told me that the issue comes from Windows. If you have a solution for me, please.

Hello!  Like many of you, I have this problem; it comes from the updates of Windows XP. I haven't touched it for a long time because I didn't want it to install them. And for some unknown reason, my computer installed them by itself, and since then the internet connection icon (in network connections) and in the taskbar (but that doesn't matter) has disappeared.  I’ve done everything you said, absolutely everything. And checking the box doesn’t help. Given that in my case, it was already checked. (The UPNP box)  I'm bringing this topic back up so you can help me... Right now, I don't know what to do; I really don't want to uninstall everything and reinstall it... Hi,  I haven't read the entire post, but try this: from the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer  then delete the value NoInternetIcon or set its data to 0
