White screen after LCD screen replacement iPhone

Hello,

I'm reaching out because I've encountered a problem that's happened to me for the second time, and it's seriously starting to annoy me.

Let me explain:

- After a shock, I had to change the LCD screen of a friend's iPhone 3GS 16G.
We bought the part, I installed it, everything went well, it booted up to the Apple logo and then we reached the "home screen", we checked that it receives signals, that the home button works well, the vibration button, the wifi, everything...
I know the LCD has nothing to do with all that, but I don't like surprises.
Just when I started to think everything was working perfectly, I realized that the POWER button requires a really hard press to function!!! :-(
My friend works in construction, so I thought it must be dirty.

- Having a lot of courage, I decided to disassemble it again to clean that button.
Indeed, quite a bit of dust, it must have prevented contact.
So a little hit with a cotton swab moistened with 90% alcohol and that’s that.

- After drying for 5 minutes, I calmly reassembled the little iPhone.
But there's a bad surprise!!! Upon restarting: a white screen right away!!!
Not even a little apple logo or anything! Just a beautiful and stressful white screen!

At this point, I'm starting to break into a sweat, feeling nauseous,...
Just kidding! :-p

Well, I'm telling myself not to panic, I probably didn't reconnect the LCD cable properly to the motherboard.
I take it apart, reconnect everything properly, check several times that it’s all back together, and upon starting, the same problem!

1st TEST:
I decide to take the LCD screen from another iPhone that was already functioning, and surprise, it does exactly the same thing!
I put the screen back in the iPhone that I used for the test, and it works just fine.

2nd TEST:
I take the LCD from the iPhone I’m trying to repair and put it on another iPhone.
Result: the LCD works without any issues!

3rd TEST:
I connected the iPhone to iTunes and performed a total restore.
White screen all throughout the restore process, and upon restarting, big surprise: white screen :-(

So to recap, the problem does not come from the LCD since it works perfectly on the other iPhones, and a restore of the iPhone doesn’t solve the issue.
I’m thinking the motherboard might be fried, but I don’t see why, and I can still hear the voice recognition sound, the vibrator, and the sound when it’s connected to iTunes.

I WOULD LIKE TO EMPHASIZE THAT I HAVE TURNED OFF THE IPHONE EACH TIME BEFORE DISASSEMBLING IT!

So if you have any little idea about what could cause this and maybe, at the same time, a method to fix this problem, I am all ears!

Thanks!!!!

Configuration: Windows XP / Firefox 3.6.13

I'm bumping this topic a bit, but I've already had this issue on a 3GS 32GB and I simply did a hard reset (home + power for 10 seconds) and it fixed my problem while restores and other DFU did not...

Hello everyone,

You’re lucky I stumbled upon this forum lol!!
I had this problem and I went on Apple's website to check; it's full of people who have the same issue as us: white LCD screen after removing the broken old LCD!! The solution: reboot the iPhone or iPod! Why? Because these little creatures with part of their casing made of metal love to accumulate static electricity, and the result is that the little bugger doesn’t like it! Believe it or not, I managed to solve the problem only after 2 days because I couldn't turn off my damn iPod touch with a white screen! The solution I’m getting to: I took a small piece of stainless steel, and once the iPod was opened without the LCD glass, I sat a bit in the dark and rubbed the plate between the charging dock and another metallic part of the motherboard, the goal being to discharge the excess static electricity. After about 20 seconds, a spark occurred; I had pressed the power button just before, so the screen was lit, and when the spark appeared, bam - the screen turned off! Bingo, the iPod! Now I didn’t turn it back on with the power button on top, but by directly connecting it to the PC, and there appeared a nice Apple logo, phew, I succeeded!

I know it sounds like a crazy trick, but it worked! I repeated the experience with another one, identical! The ideal is to let the device completely drain its battery and eventually plug it back in to charge; you’ll see it will turn on and everything will go back to normal!

P.S.: If it's a bit confusing, don't hesitate lol!!

Change the 6R8 coil on the motherboard, plain and simple.

Cost: €5.

Hello, I had broken my iPod Touch screen (there were just a lot of cracks, you could still see properly, anyway no gray spots around the cracks). Then I sent it for repair at Media Markt, and today I check it, and bam, the only flaw is that the screen has a bit... like there's a slight white veil over it. What could have been their fault?? Can they fix it?

By removing all sources of energy from the motherboard, it irreversibly loses its residual electricity after a while. So leaving it alone for several days should have worked if that's indeed the problem you're talking about.
Something definitely burned out, but finding out what it is not easy. However, since christr seems to have found the solution... I would really appreciate a little explanation regarding your indication because the goal is still to find the reason for this material deterioration.

And then soldering a resistor onto an iPhone motherboard is very, very difficult for an average person with a normal soldering iron, right?

The 6R8 coil, when it burns out, causes a white screen.
It is located on the motherboard under the top shielding plate.
It is soldered by two surface-mounted points on the board.
You can buy a new one for €5.

It overheats when you change the screen without turning off the iPhone.
The coil has a diameter of 3 mm.

Hello,

I had the same problem as you; it was about the screen connections (the two big ones, namely touch and LCD).

Good luck to you.

Maybe a drop of 90% alcohol damaged something in the connection, something I don't wish for you...

to respond to Midirty:

-First of all, thank you for replying so quickly, it’s nice not to feel alone on a forum lol!

-I have used 90% alcohol many times to clean iPhones and it has never damaged anything, plus I cleaned the POWER button so it shouldn't have anything to do with the LCD screen....

:-/

I thought of one more thing:
I know that if you connect the LCD screen while the iPhone is on, it can fry the LCD and it’s good for the trash.
But is it possible that it can fry the "graphics card on the motherboard" if you know what I mean?????
I remember being super careful about this because I've been caught out before but after all, I could have made a mistake, I’m not a robot.

If you have any information on this.....

Thanks!

Hello, have you found a solution to your problem? Because I have the same issue as you and I don't understand.

Hello everyone, I have the same issue since I changed my back cover. A completely white screen, and now it's gray. I am open to working together on this problem.

I’m sorry, but not being a professional in iPhone and LCD screens, I have no other hypotheses to formulate.

I left the motherboard exposed (not connected to the battery) for days and even after trying again several days later, the LCD screen still wouldn't turn on. But we apparently don't have the same problem; my motherboard was really fried. But it's worth a try, it could definitely save a lot of people.

Hello,
if your motherboard were dead, it wouldn't be recognized by iTunes unless I've misunderstood your issue!

Know that earlier I mentioned static electricity, so even removing the battery is the same; you have to let it drain, and by pressing the power button, it depletes the motherboard of its residual static electricity!

You should test this; it doesn't cost anything.

Oops, my mistake!
I'm just coming back to say that your motherboard might still be good, and that only the GPU (graphics processor) failed just by changing the LCD, considering your iPhone was off, it would be quite surprising anyway!

Try to find a technique to discharge its static electricity, like grounding it to an outlet (the male plug sticking out)...

I've scoured both French and English-speaking websites!

And it's a very common issue to say that these little things are fragile!! For most people, a hard reset is enough!!

Weird that it burns like that, right?
And for a welding novice, do you think it's doable without ruining everything? Because it's tiny and it requires a bit of a surgeon's hands, doesn't it?

Hello,
I might have the same problem as you, except that when I restarted the iPhone, the screen started flickering between normal screen and white screen for 15 seconds, then it turned off. And since then: white screen.
Could it be just the screen that’s causing this, or could something else have burned out while the screen was unstable?
Thanks,
