Hello,
My mother had a Sony Vaio (laptop) for a while. I don't know much about it, so if you need more references, let me know where I can find them on the computer; in short,
At some point, the computer started glitching: it works, then suddenly a blue screen appears and nothing can be done. We were told it was apparently the motherboard...
We left the computer in a cupboard, as it seems that the motherboard is very expensive (and it’s better to get a new computer...)
Today, I needed a computer, and I took out the old laptop. However, when I turn it on, a page opens asking me to choose a username and provide a password. Yet, my mother doesn't remember setting one on this computer. She tried all the passwords she might have used, but nothing works; she can't find it.
There is no "forgot password" link or anything like that. Is there a way to recover the password or reset it?

Configuration: Windows 7 / Internet Explorer 8.0 (different on the computer in question...)

It's always the same, in your antediluvian times, you tap the keys at boot F5 or F8 to see the startup menu in safe mode with network, without network, command line, blah blah.

there, you have to say that you speak a language that is completely foreign to me; Are you talking about the start menu? If so, it's not even there, in the taskbar there is only the date and time.
I have a vague memory of a manipulation to start the computer in safe mode, back when it was still the prehistory of electronics. You had to press a key repeatedly while it was starting up ...
Anyway, I don’t know what you’re talking about .... (you must think I’m an idiot) -

It's a black screen like a command line or a blue screen like Windows that wants to display.

Well, actually, it's a page with a blue background, but it's like a wallpaper you could choose to make it look nice, and a gray window pops up with the list of users (there's only one). You have to click on it to then enter the password. Below, there are three buttons: suspend, restart, and shut down.
Does that help you?
I'm not sure if this is the usual display page, since it's been quite a while since the computer has been put away; it seems to me that it's Vista configured like XP (if that helps you, but I'm not sure and no one is here to confirm for me).-

start in safe mode
in start run type cmd msconfg.exe then press enter
in the startup tab uncheck everything except for the antivirus and the firewall
restart
and provide what appears on startup
