Convert Registry.txt to Registry.reg

Hello,
In order to make important modifications, I have exported my brand new registry to "...\Desktop\registry.reg" and then edited it to "registry.txt". I changed all occurrences of "C:\Docume" (for Documents and Settings or Docume~1) to "M:\Docume", and "C:\Program Files" to "P:\Program Files". That's where I want these directories to go, and I know it works very well. We boot from another hard drive, move the directories to their new place, and then go back to the first hard drive. But before doing that, I can't convert my "registry.txt" back to "registry.reg".
You understand that it's not just a matter of renaming .txt to .reg. The conversion needs to be done, but I don't know how. Otherwise, you just have to double-click and the new one replaces the old one. But...
Otherwise, I know it can be done directly via Start, Run, "regedit [/ L:system] [/ R:user] /C filename.txt", but I'm lost in this syntax and can't find my way; it's a case of saying that.
Can someone who really knows translate this phrase into everyday language for an average administrator?

I may not have understood everything, but why did you change the extension of your backup .reg file?
After exporting the registry to your desktop, you end up with a file xxxxx.reg
You right-click on it and choose Edit. You can then modify the content of the file without going through a .txt....
