Undeletable disconnected network reader

Hello everyone,

I have a problem that's starting to annoy me!

For some time now, I have network drives that automatically add themselves over time. As many network drives are created as there are available letters left for mounting, which is 18! I haven't seen any particular triggering factor.

Moreover, it is impossible to remove them manually (right-click > disconnect); the error message is:
The network connection could not be found

NET USE also does not see the connections and cannot remove them.

Logging out does not resolve anything either!

Since then, I've learned to live with this issue as I couldn't find a solution. I use network shortcuts instead of drives.

However, there's a major problem:
if I plug in a removable device (USB stick), it won't mount since there are no available letters left. So I have to restart, and upon reboot, I have to force its mounting through disk management.

The only workaround I've found is to restart the PC
=> Not practical!

My session profile is roaming, and deleting the profile to regenerate it doesn't change anything!

Is this due to malware? I don't think so...

[edit] I almost forgot: the drives point to network shares

Config: Windows XP Pro SP3 under Active Directory domain (Windows 2003 server) with roaming profile

Before reinstalling my PC (the ultimate solution), I'm calling upon your expertise...

Best regards,
lnj

Configuration: Windows XP Pro

Hi,
a rather particular problem, have you tried restoring the system to a date before these drives appeared and everything was working well?

Hello CMP,

No, because I don't use the system restore feature of Windows...
Moreover, I've been having this problem for months and I've tried to solve it myself... since I couldn't find a viable solution, I finally decided to post (too many more urgent things...)

Anyway, thank you for your help!

Hi,
here's something strange,
1- Are you using one of those network reader connections? I mean, is one justified?
Is the network share in question valid?
By the way, is it shares or a share?
If the network share is valid, it could be that a poorly written script is trying to connect continuously.
2- It’s also possible that some malware has taken over this action.

and ... There you go!

Hi!

1- Are you using any of those network drive connections? I mean, is one of them justified?

Normally, I have 4 network drives mounted at startup (executed by a logon script) but even after removing this step, the problem returns...

Is the network share in question valid?

All shares are valid: both the auto-created ones at startup and those that are problematic. They all lead to a network share.

I should add that the auto-created drives were also renamed Disconnected network drive and I couldn't remove them either.

2- It is also possible that malware has taken over this action.

On the internet, I tried to relate the problem of the randomly created network drives to a potential malware but found nothing. In any case, if there's a bug, it's the only strange behavior of my PC...

You should also check if you have created one or more network drive connections with automatic reconnection on startup.
I also assume that the other PCs in the domain do not have this problem...

You should also check if you’ve created any network drive connections with automatic reconnection at startup.

I tried this:
1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\ 2. Create the DWORD RestoreConnection = 0 3. Reboot link: http://forum.canardpc.com/threads/47269-Windows-et-les-lecteurs-r%C3%A9seaux-(putain!!

and this:
 net use /persistent:no + reboot

But unfortunately, it doesn't work...

I also assume that the other PCs in the domain don’t have this problem....

It's not coming from my profile since I haven't noticed it on other PCs, and the other users on my PC haven't reported anything particular regarding their profiles.

By the way, I haven't thanked you for your help... So thank you!

All shares are valid: those auto-created at the opening as well as those that are parasitic. They all lead to a share of the network.

Parasitic readers all point to the same share (valid) and what's more, I hypothesize that it's the last reader I automatically created that resurfaces (even though I have currently removed this step in the session opening script).

In fact, it's as if the problem (bug or malware) goes looking in a cache for the old targets of network drives to recreate them.

I want to understand the problem (I am determined to get to the bottom of it). I could simply reinstall the workstation, but if I don't understand the cause of this malfunction, nothing tells me that the problem won't reappear later.

So initially, I will hypothesize that it's malware that is playing tricks on me...

Anyone to help me?

News ...

So apparently the problem was related to my Antivir installation. I had suspected this for a long time, as the issue only appeared in the evening. That was precisely when the daily scan started....

So I tried reinstalling it, and since then I've noticed that the problem seems to have disappeared.

Therefore, I will mark it as resolved in a little while, if no more problems arise ... at least I hope so!!!

That said, I still don’t understand why my previous installation caused this problem, and what’s more unusual is that I seemed to be the only one having this issue ... (I’ve exhausted all my research on the internet, that says it all!)

Well, since the problem hasn't come back... let's say it was due to my installation of Antivir that was acting up...

Why? That's an unsolved mystery...
=> Resolved!
