I chose Open Office for word processing and for the spreadsheet (Excel) but I can't get spell check to work.
I tried to load a dictionary in vain
How do I do that?

Ahhh I found it... it's a manipulation issue during installation: You need to check this:

Tools menu > Options > Language settings > Language > Available language modules, click on the Edit button.

A window opens and if the selection "French" in the dropdown box for Language is not preceded by the ABC icon... that's not good!

Additionally, I selected a second dictionary in addition to "French (France)" I took "French (reform)" -

It also seems to me that if you don't follow the steps scrupulously (like properly closing the quick launch icon for example), it doesn't work correctly.

I found the solution on an OOo forum (that is, OOo = Open Office.org it may sound silly but it took me a while to understand it was an abbreviation... well it's 3 AM, huh...) here is the link, impossible to mess up your installation after that:

https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Fr.openoffice.org/FAQ/Generale/116

Well, now all that's left is to write :)

Hello. I struggled too, but actually it's really simple: tool -> language -> for selection, check French; the same for "For paragraph" and "For the whole text," you check French in both, and normally it highlights the mistakes. At least it worked for me, I hope it works for you too, peace!

Hello
file -> assistants -> install new dictionaries
after installation completely exit OO including the icon in the taskbar on the right
restart OO, tools -> spell checking.
don’t forget to select the correct language for the document.

I have the same problem as Nono, everything is properly installed but the checker isn't highlighting the mistakes; I have followed all the steps rigorously. The checker signals that the correction is made, yet the mistakes persist.

Hello
Nothing to do after installing the dictionaries except to close Open Office as well as the Quick Start of Open Office (at the bottom right of the taskbar near the clock) and maybe click the Automatic Check button (ABC).
See you!

Hello
See here to download the dictionaries:
http://fr.openoffice.org/DicOOo/index_dicooo.htm
You have a tutorial to help you with the operation.
Good luck
See you later

Hello,
I am a new user of the forum

I have a problem with the spell check on Open Office because even after installing the dictionaries, when I do the spell check, it tells me that the document has been checked and that there are no issues, while there are still mistakes, and I can only close the window
Is there something else to download?
Thank you in advance.

I had the same problem and I think I found the solution. I had loaded several dictionaries (including English), but not yet French. By the way, I believe that if we write a text in French (with spelling mistakes) first and then load the French dictionary afterwards, there’s no way to correct the text because it was already associated with the language of another dictionary (in this case, English, by default). Even when changing the default language to French after loading the dictionary, the text did not recognize it. However, I was able to correct new texts in French without any problems, written after loading the French dictionary and after changing the default language (to French).

I can't seem to get the spell check to work. I am on my thesis, which is 30 pages long, and I would like to have the spell check.
Thank you in advance

This thread is now obsolete. Version 2.4.0 now comes with the French dictionary pre-installed.

Why hack MS-Office when there is a free solution available? Use OpenOffice.org

Hello, I have the same problem as everyone else but I am looking for something else like a checker for "s" and accents. These are my big problems. Is there a checker on Open Office for this kind of mistakes?

Before asking a question, please take the time to read the answers and the links that have been placed in this thread.

This thread is from 2005 and is outdated, we are at OpenOffice.org 3.

Hello, I'm in a tough spot like you previously, but it says there are macros and that the settings refuse them. I don't know where to go to enable macros (by the way, I don't understand anything about macros, what they're for, and how to use them). If someone could tell me if there are sites designed for beginners like me.

Even in OpenOffice 3, it's still just as annoying to try to find a solution to this problem!!!

Good evening
Before, I had the spell checker on my computer and suddenly it disappeared; it was very handy
to check the few mistakes we can make. Could you please tell me how I can get this spell checker back? Thank you in advance.
