Download speed settings

Hello,
I had never really thought about this problem before, but now it has become more and more cumbersome. My download speed is very low on "large" files of about 150 MB, most of the time it's 6 kb/sec, but it can go down to 2 kb/sec (which is 48 hours \_/) while on "small" files (10 kb) it easily goes up to 68 kb/sec! I have a 512k modem and my speed is 608 kbps, my computer is a home XP.
There have been times when my connection on large files was able to reach 50 kb/sec, but that's rare and it requires a lot of restarts. The server is reliable, so it's unlikely that it's due to too many simultaneous downloads.
Do you know a way to manually adjust my download speed? Do I need a download manager? If so, which one?
Or...
Do you have a miracle solution? ^^
Thank you in advance
Configuration: Windows XP Home 512k modem speed 608 kbps ?_?

Hi,

It depends on the servers we are downloading from, I'm willing to do it, but when it's on any site and it takes these guys (and myself) half an hour to download a small setup of 17 megabytes of ***** ... I doubt it's the server. Websites like 01net never have download speeds of 10kb/s, let’s stop the nonsense, there’s definitely a problem somewhere.

There are tons of messages regarding this issue, but unfortunately, there hasn’t been any solid response to date.

Just because the guy wants to download a game doesn’t mean we should tell him to go screw himself and buy it, it’s that he has a problem with his connection. I don’t think it comes from the modem either because it could be some French people with Orange or some Belgians with Belgacom, the issue remains the same.

So I think that if you don’t know the solution, there’s no point in throwing out something like "it’s the server's fault." Either we say we don’t know, or we say nothing at all ...

Best regards.
