Video editing with .mts file

Hello,
I'm a complete beginner when it comes to video editing...

I bought a JVC Everio AVCHD HDD camcorder that produces .MTS video files.

Wanting to edit all my .MTS files, I first tried using Windows Media Player on my XP laptop, but it doesn't seem to recognize .mts files.
I was then advised to use the free VLC software, but I don't understand anything about it...

How can I do this editing simply, and with software that is preferably free (for a beginner, buying such a camcorder has already been a significant investment...)

Also, can someone explain to me why, when I watch my video files (with VLC or Windows Media Player), the audio is out of sync with the image - the image is slow during the first few seconds and, as a result, the sound is a few seconds ahead of everything else in the playback...

    Thank you to Zigg and Hubert for their accurate and specific response regarding the AVCHD format.
    JVC has a format derived from AVCHD, and a utility included with the camcorder allows for the transfer of files and basic organization of scenes.
    The software "Évério," available for free download, also assists with editing for JVC camcorders.
    PS: Sellers hype their products but conveniently fail to mention that
    this format is not intended for editing but for connecting the camcorder to the TV, as most camcorder users do.

    Hello,
    I just bought a Sony camcorder, and the files are MTS files (or m2ts, but it's the same).

    In order to work on my videos, I need to convert these MTS/m2ts files.
    To do this, I'm using the free software FormatFactory that you can download easily from the internet. Also, it is in French.

    The results are surprising.

    My computer is an XP with 2GB of RAM (so, not very powerful!)
    To edit my videos, I use Pinnacle version 9.1.
    And with this hardware, it is perfectly possible to create good quality DVDs easily.

    It should be noted that Pinnacle version 9.1 accepts AVI format, but it often bugs with this format.
    So I encode my video files in MPEG1 format (unfortunately, FormatFactory does not allow encoding to this format. Encoding is done using a paid software AVS Converter).

      I am following up on my message from December 22, 2012.

      I have "dropped" the Pinnacle software (even though I had purchased version 14!) which no longer suited me.

      After testing several video software, I chose MAGIX (Video Deluxe 2013 Premium) that accepts the MTS/m2ts format from my Sony HD camcorder.

      So, I no longer need to encode beforehand, as MAGIX directly recognizes this format.

      The downside of this software is that it is paid (about €116 as of 08/12/2013), but it is well worth this investment.

    Good evening,
    For the files created by this camcorder, only a powerful computer can handle the editing, not a laptop running XP, which causes the delay between audio and video. Affordable paid software will then allow for a smooth and complete edit. Sorry for this pessimistic answer. Best regards, Hubert.

    Hello,

    I am not a digital video specialist.
    To manage AVCHD video, you need a powerful computer (preferably a desktop in my opinion) with a good video card. It is also preferable to have paid editing software capable of handling these streams. This software is primarily used to import video onto the computer.
    The lack of power in your computer could possibly explain the difficulties you are experiencing in playing the files with VLC (which is primarily a video player), for example.
    And you also need to determine the use you want to make of your files.

    Now, maybe it's possible to convert your files with SUPER software, MediaCoder, Free HD Converter, and others that seem to recognize "HD" files. But be careful, conversion will probably cause a loss of quality in your files :(

    Finally, try using the basic editing software VideoPad Video Editor (do not install the Toolbar or uninstall it if you have it in IE), so the version on the Softonic site seems to be free. This software is extremely simple (cut/paste, only 3 transitions, hardly any effects, adding large text).
    For WMM it does not accept this type of file (only AVI, ASF, WMV, and MPG containers), so conversion could be a way to use it, but this will be done at the cost of quality for your files.
    And maybe you also received editing software when you purchased the camcorder.

    One note, for conversion or any other editing, close as many applications as possible because the operations are likely to heavily tax the computer, and let it work peacefully.

    I hope that more knowledgeable people will respond to your request and can provide you with better suggestions than I can ;)

    Hello to you three,
    thank you for your responses. It's true that I'm quite lost with everything related to equipment and digital vocabulary, but I'll try to apply your suggestions to finally be able to watch my films!!! I agree with Glandu who says that sellers promote their products well but don't fully inform about the other equipment needed to fully enjoy the purchase of the camcorder. In any case, I'll do my tests and keep you updated...

    Hello there young padawan!!

    I recommend the software Sony Vegas Pro, very easy to use and smooth; it is reputed to be one of the best in the galaxy =)

    For XP, you should get Sony Vegas Pro 9 ^^ (I have it and my PC is not powerful at all). Can you join the dark side? It's up to you to choose ;)
